What could have caused this?

Yesterday I was driving home to SF from Sacramento when I noticed that my car was a little bit louder than usual. I pulled over and it got worst. When I jacked up the car I noticed this hole on my Crawford cats. I know I didn't hit anything so it couldn't have been that. Here are some pics of the cat.

The black and silver stains are from the temporary patch that I had to get from Pep Boys so that I could get home.

What can I do with these cats? Do crawfords have warranty?

how long did you have your cats installed? how many miles?

is the angled section of the cat (where the hole is....) is bulged in or out? if it is pushed in, this would suggest something impacted the cat. is the missing piece inside by any chance?

anyone else have this problem?

I bought these cats used. He said he only used them for about 1000 miles then decided to get rid of it. It is located on the top part of the angled side, facing forward. The peice is missing. The hole doesn't seem to be bulging in any direction.

I was wondering, would the impact of the cats rubbing against the heat shields may cause this?
