K & N DO OR DON'T ?¿
some one at the service department at Miller infiniti told me not to put a cold air intake because it won't do that great on performance and it might mess up the warranty so he told me to go get a k & n drop in air filter and i could probably get around 10hp from it .....im thinkin about it but i heard monster flow air filters are better ? but i was wondering if any one has a different air filter in there car and if they notice any differences

Re: K & N DO OR DON'T ?¿
The manufacturers spend a lot of time experimenting and tuning these sytems for our cars. Some manufacturers more than others. (read K&N). There have been a few bugs to sort out but IMO the systems are fine and shouldn't have any bearing on warranty.
These systems themselves put out maybe 10 or so hp, so I doubt you're gonna see anything close to that with just a filter.
If your dealer's feeding you that, I think you need to find a new dealer more 'in tune' with some reasonable mods. He's being too conservative.

Re: K & N DO OR DON'T ?¿
I agree that manufacturers spend a lot of time designing the air inlet systems. Their criteria includes cost, noise, ease of maintenance service, and performance (in some vehicles). Aftermarket equipment usually places performance or looks as the highest priority.
Apparently inlet air noise was a higher priority on the G35 than on the 350Z, This can be seen by the baffled air duct assembly on the G35 and the straight air duct on the 350Z.
The comment from Miller's service department is questionable. SEMA has and will support the use of aftermarket air inlet and cat back exhaust systems.
Typically, the only thing that is no longer warranted by the car manufacturer is the aftermarket equipment. However, superchargers, turbochargers and nitrous oxide are usually excluded due to the additional stress added to the engine and drive train.

The Stillen air box modification includes a K&N air filter. This unit uses the existing "air scoop" assembly from Infiniti. It's an easy install with just a little additional sound.

I don't know, is our cars really choked or not? I do know that I read in motor trend or some other big car magazine, that they took a 03 Cobra, took out the stock air filter and dropped in a K&N and get this............they gained 21 rwhp!!!!!! unreal!! I bet K&N loved that. apparently the 03 cobra is very very choked down for emissions. And keep in mind, this was the ONLY thing done to the car. That is why I ask if anyone know's about our air flows..........or has anyone seen a dyno graph after the replacement?..............MASTERSR6

Monster Flow Bad experience
I used a monster flow on my 2002 3.5 liter altima for a few months. In that time i killed two maf sensors. luckily the warranty covered it (had to lie
). The G35 MAF is a higher quality and much beefier looking assembly but again with prior use on a VQ35DE engine, I would recommend NOT using a monster flow filter. I have used an Apexi 3" cone, K&N drop in, tru flo drop in (foam), and a K&N 3" cone filter all with great success on the VQ35DE (I have used both the dropin's on my G as well).
Nissan's stock airbox flows very well and I recommend keeping the air box and replacing only the midpipe from MAF to intake.
I have dyno tested the altima's air box and it dyno'ed better than my WAI or CAI i had (with midpipe replacement). The G35 airbox has been improved on above the altima's, so I would suspect similar results will be obtained on the G.

i haven't noticed much boost in performance with the filter... it's nice knowing i won't have to change the filter in a long long time, though. changing the filter isn't as easy as the 1-2-3 like steps in my previous cars..

I bought the K&N filter for my G35. I immediatly noticed
a decrease in gas mileage. After communicating with
K&N about my observations, K&N recommended that
"I remove the K&N filter and replace it with the paper one."
Seems that the G35 computer is not programmed to handle
the increased air flow. What a dissapointment.

Re: K & N DO OR DON'T ?¿
how long did you let the filter stay in there? the ECU is adaptive and can take a full week to adjust to a mod. The A/F ratio is controlled by the O2 sensors and is constantly adjusted. The ECU is also driver adaptive which means a hard driven car will show more power than a conservatively driven car.

Re: K & N DO OR DON'T ?¿
I read in another thread that if you disconnect the battery terminal and let the car fully discharge overnight (12-14 hours) it will force the ECU to reset and the gas mileage will improve, don't remember exactly where I saw it, but it is out there.

Re: K & N DO OR DON'T ?¿
K&N told me to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for
1 hour to reset the ECU. This did not help. Users of this forum
informed me that the G35 needs 12 hours of battery disconnect before
the computer will reset. I did a 14 hour disconnect and the gas mileage
is back to normal. I am enjoying my K&N drop in filter now!

What were your before and after MPGs?
I have had only 7 tanks of gas since purchase, with 22.7 MPG as the high, 15.0 MPG as the low, and an overall average of 17.14 MPG. Not good all, but when I put a K&G filter in my prior car, I found it hard to measure any increase in MPG.

The K&N filter has been in for over a month now since the 14 hour
battery disconnect. I believe there has been no change in the fuel
efficiency with the K&N filter whatsoever. It is hard to tell if there are
any power gains either. It does sound better upon acceleration, and
knowing I won't need to buy another airfilter for the life of the car is nice!

Re: K & N DO OR DON'T ?¿
K&N informed me the part number for the G35 was 33-2259
Initially I bought 33-2031-2 from Northern Auto Parts from the
internet. This model was listed as the "cartridge type". You
don't want this one! When it arrived, it had instructions for installation
on a Maxima and included spacers to place in the filter "tray".
Since my G35 has a Cold Air Input without the tray, I queried K&N
about the Maxima instructions and the spacers.
Here is what K&N said to me:
Hello David,
You have purchased the incorrect filter. The filter you
bought is the Cartridge type air filter you need the Non-Cartridge type
filter. The filter you bought is also listed for the Infiniti but it does
not fit your application. Please order part number 33-2259.
