To answer and clear a few things up - Test pipes are not legal for street use (in every state that I'm aware of). Reason why is that they eliminate the cats on your car wich are required for emissions by law. By removing them, you're able to free up the exhaust flow a bit, thus achieving more power through the engine. Another "side effect" (to some at least) is that now that the cats are removed and you have straight pipes in their place (most often made of thinner "less over all mass" materail) you will get more "exhaust noise" both from the rear (tips) as well as from the inside of the car, often reffered to or called "rasp." Some people like it, others hate it. In some cases it sounds high picthed and is only evident in the upper (high) RPM range, while others have noticed it throughout the RPM range (depending on the exhaust system they have). They now make test pipes with built in resonators which are designed to absurb the "rasp" and in return help smooth out the sound, but from what I have seen and heard, the results are minimal. All in all its one of those love and hate mods, as its either one or the other. Another "side effect" from test pipes are the fumes. Your exhaust will smell at lot "richer" and to those of you who have garages and or park in indoor parking lots, be forewarned, the smell does get strong! The Y-pipe is the connection from the cats to the exhaust system. They have several designs out on the market, all claiming to be "better than stock" and I'll agree they might be better designed than OEM in terms of flow, but do they really give you much in terms of gains, I don't think so. I have run my car with both the stock y-pipe and an aftermarket y-pipe, and I havent felt or heard a difference. Some systems come with them, some do away with it completly while with others its an option (like the Fuji exhaust). My advice, don't waste you money. Stick with the stock one, and you'll be just fine. Now with headers, yes they will give you a bit more "exhaust note" once again this is mostly due to the fact that their is less mass in an aftermarket header than with the OEM manifolds, and in relation to better exhaust flow, aftermarket headers "tune" the exhaust which does change its audiable traits. Power wise, some cliam they're not worth the time, but I strongly disagree! Shorty style headers (which for the G are most every kind) deliver better flow and do give better high end power gains, but long or "full length" style headers have always been proven to be strong performers and have always shown significant gains on dynos. Price wise, full length headers are usually twice if not three times more than shorty style headers. Also, FYI some full length headers do away with the cats, so they're a header and test pipe in one design. These are often for track and race use only. Moving on to the exhaust system, when the G first hit the market, we only had a few choices, but now they have many systems out their starting as low as $700 and going upwards and over $3000. They all have unique sounds and each system varies in terms of what kind of power it will give. While most only show gains toward the upper RPM (WOT) band, some have been proven to increase power throughout the RPM band, which is best for street use. Bigger isnt always better, and the same holds true for dual setups. It all falls into what other mods you have on your car. Engines running Turbos and Superchargers, may see results with a true dual setup, while with naturally aspirated engines may actually see a loss of power on the low to mid end. You really have to do your homework and check with actual dyno results to see which system is right for you. I myself have the Fujitsubo Legalis-R system (was one of the first to get the system "back when you had to wait weeks for it from Japan"). Prior getting it though I looked into Borla, B&B, Injen and a few others and found (saw first hand) that it was one of the few systems out their tuned to make power throughout the entire band. From idle to redline, no power was lossed, which wasn't the case with many running the Borla system (just ask a Borla owner) whom actually felt and stated (search this forum) that they lost some low end torque. Sound wise, the Fuji system sounds like an exotic V8 which has a calm and collect idle that roars when pushed. The sound is smooth and agressive with ZERO interior rasp. Shop around and see what works best for you and your budget. The best advice I can give anyone is to hear the systems first hand before you buy one. Last but not least, a CAI will give you that sought after engine (intake) growl. Many get these kits just for the sound, not giving a dime about any claimed gains. Price wise they're afordable and installation is a snap! I hope all this helps...

Exhaust: A lot of folks here swear by the Borla. It is lighter then stock and affordable (around $850). However, I'm gonna reccommend if you have the cash, go with Stillen's. I've researched both types of exhausts and the Stillen had better horse power gains (although it is slightly heavier then stock) as well as I liked the design of the product (the piping and all). I'm not too certain on the sound of the Borla, so ask around, but the Stillen sounds great! Although can be slightly loud in higher RPMs.
Now as far as intakes, AEM or Injen is your best bet and make sure to look into a bypass valve for the CAI, so you don't have to worry about hydrolock.
Now about the straight pipes, its completely up to you. yeah, you'll get more power, but they aren't street legal. You might want to look into high flow cats.
Hope that helps.

Just an FYI on test pipes. Typically, you will lose your low end power if you are not running a turbo or supercharger. You may gain power way up on your top end, but your 0-60 times will suffer.

It all depends on what you want....high end power or low end.

Personally, I think you are gonna want the low end power. This is why I went with Crawford cats instead of test pipes.

Now, if I had forced induction........test pipes are where it's at.
