Can we make the CAI better? Maybe?

I have the Injen CAI, never any problems. I think their are some things that I can do to improve on the whole CAI thing, issue's not limited to one brand. I'm thinking out loud here, feel free to add your own thoughts.

1. I noticed that their's allot of space around the intake pipe where it duct's down into the fender well. I suspect(can't prove it) that super hot air from the engine compartment it moving into the fender well and into the intake.

2. Even after sealing intake pipe where it goes into the fender, the intake pipe remains extreamly hot to the touch. I wonder how much heat it transmit's to the incomming air with such high pipe surface temps. Especially since I can hear engine ping at throttle tip in, even on premium gas.

To seal the intake pipe where it passes into the fender well, I fashioned some chunks of 4" foam block to block off super heated engine compartment air form possibly being forced into the intake and into the engine. I ran the car for several miles to assure myself the their was no issues of the foam melting from underhood temps. It's fine.

Now, on how hot the intake pipe gets under the hood. I'm thinking about wraping this reflective insulation around the piping. www.reflectizinc.com It can withstand 300 degree temps. Thing is, I'll have to give up my nice shinny intake look, oh well I don't have it for looks (grin). I'm also wondering if the 1/4" fiberglass insulation I found would insulate better than the reflection stuff, since the reflective stuff basically has plastic bubble wrap between the foil as it's insulation. I would tape up the fiberglass insulation with the same foil tape that the reflective insulation calls for.

Any thoughts guys?

One thing I'd love to know, some OBD II computers will show a tech checking the system the temp of the incomming air, I wonder if our system can give the same info.

i dont think puting insolation around the intake will help keep it cool i think it will make it hotter.

Thanks for the input.

But the principle behind a Cold Air Intake is that your drawing colder air from OUTSIDE the underhood enviroment. Temps under the hood are extreamly hot. I want to insulate the portion of the CAI that's run's through that hot underhood enviroment. Touching the intake pipe show's how hot it get's under the hood. I don't want that hot pipe to heat up the cooler outside air it's drawing from the fender well, theirby deminishing the whole point of a CAI. I want to keep the cold air as cold as possible.

If you are that worried about heat, put a factory looking hood scoop. My old '70 GTO had a two small scoops that went straight into the air filter(ram air).I don't think you should worry though.good luck

There is a small increase in air temp at cylinder from heat transferred by CAI tube. It has to be negligible IMO. The air is moving rapidly through system and is not going to have much chance for a heat exchange calorie party on the fly. Just my 2

Thanks again guys, sixfive I understand what your saying and I can't find fault with what your saying, I don't think I'll bother with the insulation.

Thanks to everyone again.

get a bag of ice then befor u race at the drag strip put the ice on the intake. It is kinda cheating but it does work
