Exhaust Rattling in the Cold
Exhaust Rattling in the Cold
Lately, when I start driving my car in the cold weather (32 degrees and under), I notice a rattling sound coming from the rear passenger side. I first thought it might be my Tein suspension, but I checked it and everything was fine. Someone told me it may be my exhaust (which is a Stillen dual cat-back) banging against my sway. How is this possible, is there really some kind of expansion/contraction in the cold weather that causes this? When I inspect the exhaust this weekend, anything I should look for? And has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to correct it?
Thanks!
Thanks!
I have been having the same problem, but with my stock exhaust. I only have a Magnaflow mid-pipe. Its been really cold every moring, in the 30's as well, and i can hear the rattle. I thought it was comming form the engine, but when i went out side of my car, it was obvious that it was comming from the exhaust. It only does it untill its warmed up. By the end of the day i cant hear it anymore, but it is annoying. Im glad im not the only one with that problem.
I would check the hangars of the catback..
and also try to knock on it (let the thing cool down first !)
to see if there is anything "movable"
because i had similar problems before, but it was because of
the damn tuner shop didn't put the exhaust up properly..
and it rattled near the muffler section
hope this helps

Follow up time:
Well, I checked the exhaust and there is probably less the a few mm clearence between the sway and the exhaust pipe (this would be the second exhuast pipe that is added with a dual exhaust). I tried putting some velcro tape like one fellow recommended. It helped a little, but not much. Another person told me to put some kind of rubber tube around the sway to muffle the sound. I'll probably try that later this winter.
Or I might just deal with it and next year invest in a winter beater, lol.
