look at my intake! help! power/torque/mileage loss
for various reasons i ended with a jwt pop charger, no air duct behind the grill, and the use of injen piping that is meant for the lower part of injen cai. this put on relatively early on in my mileage and i never reset my ecu. but after i had it on i notice power/torque loss and poor mpg ( never passed 280miles for 15 gallons!). I have no other mods, so i'm thinking that this setup needs to be changed and i dont have my stock intake setup, since 350z stuff is more available for sale.. i was wondering if i could just run the 350z tube with the Z stock airbox for a stock like intake performance?
i dont think the pipe is long enough so my jwt is in the wrong position too, not covered well by the heat shield. also my mid pipe exahust can is crunched from a speed bump, will this add to performance loss?
heres the thumb nail:

how is the popcharger supposed to breathe properly when the duct that's supposed to supply it air is no longer there? not to mention that it now has no choice but to inhale engine bay (HOT!) air since you've basically negated the point of the heat shield
putting the 350z intake box probably wouldn't work out too well since the Z airbox is designed to ingest air thru the 350z bumper, not the G35's... the two stock airboxes have very different designs.
all you need to do to help remedy the problem is remove that injen tube and replace it with the Z-tube... this will allow the popcharger to sit in the proper location. then replace the rest of the foam on the heat shield and put the front snorkel duct back on (the duct can't be that expensive even at dealer pricing)
it's also worth noting that with any type of breathing mod you usually trade low end hp/torque for high end, which might partially account for what you experienced. (PS i get waaaaaay less than 280 miles on a full tank)

Based on the location of your air filter and the lack of heat shielding, it makes perfect sence that you lost HP/TQ and MPG.
The MAF sensor sees the elevated air inlet temperatures probably around 130-150'F. The ECU in turn pulls timing advance and greatly increases the A/F ratio. All of this is an effort by the ECU to prevent knock because of the greatly increased tendancy of knock to occur with high air inlet temperatures.
Put the shroud back on and the problem will disappear.

Tony, I don't mean to thread jack, but I have a question that is kind of along these lines. I ordered the non-MREV 5/16 ISO kit from you two months ago, great product I might add!!, and I am wondering will installing the popcharger have any gains over my current setup of a Z-Tube, 5/16 and K&N panel with the spacer, or was the spacer designed to work with a "stock" intake design?

It'll work with any of the intakes. Stock or not.
The only thing to look out for is the hot air intakes. Or intakes that are not shrouded from the hot air within the engine compartment. And I've seen some with a filter hanging in the hot engine bay.
The MREV will still do what it always does, its basically just a piece of metal, but if the MAF sees hot air ingestion, the ECU will pull timing and reduce power and MPG. So always do what ever it takes to keep cold air flowing to the engine.
