I had the resonator cut out of my exhaust system on my G35 Sedan, that thing weighs like 50 pounds. Definitely lost some torque, but my cruise rpms at 80 mph are 250 less (2850 rpm at 80 in 6th gear)
I am in the middle of an ECU reset, which in my experience with the VQ35DE has been the answer to torque loss following mods.
This is not a mod to be done in and of itself. the exhaust sound is very shitty right now, sounds like a fart can with the stock muffler. I have a dual tip shiny magnaflow on order 14830 model. I should have that on early next week. The resonator removal cost me 60.00 including fabrication/parts for a bolt in 2.5" pipe and reducer.

I hate to say it, but you must be mistaken. Speed at a particular RPM in a particular gear is a function of ONLY ONE THING: gearing.
This has nothing to do with your exhaust, even if you did manage to increase horsepower.
Unless you changed your transmission 6th gear ratio (god knows how one would do this!) or your rear axle ratio, (didn't know any alternatives were available here either), OR, more than likely, you changed tire diameter.
An increase in tire size (outer diameter) could definately cause a drop in RPM at a given speed.

are you sure?
am I mistaken?
OMG!
That has never happened before.
Sorry y'all. my 80 mph cruise rpm is 2850 in sixth, stock tires etc. I could have sworn I was at 3000-3100 rpm before, what are y'all at?
I understand the whole mechanically linked thing, piston to wrist pin to connecting rod to crankshaft to flywheel to clutch/pressure plate to tranny gears to driveshaft to differential to axle to wheel.
so where am I screwing up here? Is the cruise rpm not that high? What do y'all see at 80 mph? Stock 17's with Goodyear GS-D's. DoI have a problem with my car????? Or just my old age/memory? HaHa

I was thinking about this mod (i.e., replacing the resonator tube with the Z350 tube. People have said that it is "louder" but not that it sounds like a fart can. Now I'm worried. Does it really sound worse?
I believe you are referring to the intake, this post is about
the exhaust. The 350Z intake duct does not make the
car sound like a shitcan! Mine sound MUCH better than
prior to the 350Z duct.

splashguards, GG red 7 wire Hypergrounding kit, 350Z intake duct, K&N filter.

yes the resonator on the exhaust needs to be accompanied by an aftermarket muffler. after driving it this weekend I lost a noticeable amount of low end torque and gained a like amount of high end (>4000 rpm) hp. This may not be worth it, I will dyno early next month. I have a magnaflow 14830 dual tip muffler coming soon. If that does not fix my problem, I will throw in a 18" or so glasspack. Next step after that is a dual muff setup with matched length b pipes for that quad pipe look in the back. I don't know if it will work.
thanks for the stupidity check on me. I need that every now and then.
