Cat-back/Hi-Flow cat combos?
Cat-back/Hi-Flow cat combos?
Okay...I know this is going to sound dumb...but I've been reading upon the progress of everyone with their exhausts, of various manufacture...
What I want to know is A) is there any valid reason to NOT put on a high flow cat with these exhausts and B) if you're using a high flow cat, what manufacture/make are you using and what type of exhaust?
I'm trying to get my ducks in a row before cuttin' on the car.
Thanks!!

I don't believe it is legal to change out your catalatic
converter unless the old one was damaged in an accident.

I live in an area of Louisiana with no emissions testing...we don't have stupid rules like Californication.
From what I've read on MagnaFlow's site, their cats are street legal as far as emissions go. The only reason I'm not considering cutting the thing out entirely is I'm concerned that no cat at all would trip something in the OBDII package.

I guess nothing is illegal until you get caught.
It's federal law that states that you can not replace your cats with anything other than an OEM cat. It's federal law that states that you can not modify or compromise the emissions control systems on your car.
That is, with two exceptions:
1) Your cats get damaged and no OEM cat exists to replace them.
2) Your car is has over 50,000 miles on the odometer. (I'm guessing that this is/was the expected life of a cat.) Then you can change to "shorty" or "high flow" cats (as long as it is a true cat). Not before.
Note, while the individual states may or may not do emissions testing, they are responsible for visually verifying that you have proper emissions control systems. Whether the "inspector" does this or not depends upon your luck. I've had "inspectors" threaten to fail my car's inspection because they could see that I'd put headers on my car. This is even though my car passed the emissions test. This is even though I had a CARB sticker for the headers right there on a frame of the engine bay. And I'm in NC, not CA.

RyanGSanders, I believe AlextheKurrupt made some mods along those lines some months ago. You may want to p/m him for more info.

Re: Cat-back/Hi-Flow cat combos?
The mod plan for my Sedan currently includes hi-flow cats after the Stillen Dual Catback System.
Before spending the big bucks for aftermarket high flow cats, I want to research the issue and see dyno HP & torque results. The CFM rating of aftermarket high flow cats is usually available. The problem is identifying the stock cats' CFM rating. Where can we find that information?
Crawford may be building these hi-flow cat downpipes by now. As you can see by the picture, they used Random Tech Cats... a good thing in my opinion.

Re: Cat-back/Hi-Flow cat combos?
they are right about the 50k miles
if your gonna touch teh cats now you might as well just put straight through downpipes and make triple the power of hi flow cats, mines and amuse dynoed at 14 and 15 respectively.
ive already ordered the mines(bigger piping and my future says turbo) and currently run a set i borrowed from technosquare.

Yep but IF you do get Caught. $2,500 fine Per Cat Thanks to the EPA That's the FEDS $5,000 for 15 extra horses? Not worth it to me. I can use that towards a ProCharger set up.............
