JBX,

Actually I was wondering if I could borrow your "helper" to assist me with my install. I am sure he knows a lot more about this stuff than I do.

It'll cost ya.....PS2 game, game boy, new aluminum bat......somethin'. It always does me......... It is nice to have a helper, however, to help hold things steady on this very simple, but WORTHWHILE install. Install new gaskets if your car has say over 10,000 mi. on it.

Ha Ha, I bet. Thanks for the tip on the gaskets.

JBX and jameyb...

I have the first generation Stillen on my sedan and am quite happy with the extra punch my car now has.

The question that has been mulling around in my head is "what was changed from the first to the current generation?" was it the mid-pipe resonators? end section muffler??

Most people with the first gen cat-back will be curious if changing the end section or midi's will reduce the droning.

Any feedback or comments are appreciated.

Oh well, at least I can use the money I saved on some ramps for the install. Will Rhino Ramps get the car high enough off the ground for me to get under and install?
Most muffler/exhaust shops will install for $50-60. Its really not worth risking climbing under there. The shops have the lift, the tools, and the insurance if anything goes wrong. If you do it and mess up, you own it. For $60, save your knuckles.

"This stainless steel cat-back exhaust system will increase your sedan's performance by 21-23 hp and 21-23 lbs ft. of torque - at the rear wheels!"

This is Stillen's claim as to the performance gain from their exhaust. Has anyone experienced any gain close to Stillen's stated gains? Stillen also claims that their entire exhaust only weighs 13lbs, can anyone verify this? At 13lbs, that seems to be quite a savings versus the stock sedan exhaust. Thanks for the info.

I have the first gen Stillen exhaust, and it definitely doesn't weigh 13 lbs. It weighs as much as the stock exhaust, around 50 lbs.

It was advertised to weigh 13lbs less than the OEM system.

= Go For It!

Just do it!
But before you start a couple of things-
I would highly suggest you get a hydraulic floor jack that can take your car up at least 20"+ for this install (along with jack stands for final support which are essential). The install of a catback alone should not pose too much of a challenge (as opposed to a bit more of a challenge if you were doing headers). You'll need more than rhinos for a little more elbow room and not having sheet metal staring you down If you want a pretty good idea of what you'll be going thru (even though you have a sedan) take a look at this DIY:

http://www.g-owners.com/article_read.asp?id=39

And no matter how many miles- make sure you have a fresh set of gaskets as well- they just don't cost that much and you might as well while you're there.

Take it easy and enjoy the satisfaction...

FWIW, while Stillens products are strong on build quality, they do have a long history of quoting what I would call marketing numbers.

Thanks for the check, I mis-read the description.

Yeah, the marketing guys write the descriptions and the engineering guys are screaming the truth somewhere in there. It would be awesome if the published numbers were truly realized, but I have read no accounts of the claimed numbers on a dyno.

All of the dynos I have seen (including ones for coupes and Zs) report about 8-10 hp gains. That is what I am hoping for.

As far as the install goes, I have some Rhino ramps for the front. The back is what I am worried about. I have a hydraulic jack that will be used to jack up the rear. Once the car is in the air, how do you place the jackstands underneath the sides of the car without damaging anything?

It appears that my jackstands will damage the plastic and the small lip under the sides of the car if I place them as shown in the "DIY" above. I was thinking about buying another set of ramps and placing them under the rear tires. I could always return the second set of ramps once I am finished.

Well, I would use the jackstands with a block under both spring seats on the rear once you use the jackto get the tail up as high as possible. This would be a pretty stable location if you do it right. And leave the jack under the diff as extra support. The front can stay on the rhino ramps just make sure you brace the ramps well in case they move when the back is going up and higher than the front. I am doing my Sedan this Saturday and plan to do a DIY with lots of pictures.
