Painting OEM grille black...

I decided not to go with an aftermarket grille, but instead, paint the OEM grille black. I would probably leave the infiniti symbol the way it is but i would paint the rest of it black.. 2 things:

1. Has anyone done it? can anyone post pics of a LR (red) g35 coupe with the oem grille painted black? If no one has done it on a LR coupe, then can someone photochop it for me?... i wanna get an idea of how it would look.

2. I know SOO many of you have the oem grille, if u dont need it, ill pay for shipping. PM me if you can help a brotha out

thanks!

Painted grille...........NOT!

Painting your grille isn't a good idea! If you're a detail freak like myself you'll
be removing it every six months to repaint because of the chips. I've painted
grilles on previous cars and always regreted it. The correct way to do this
if you really want to have a black grille is to have it "Black Chromed" and
you'll never have to bother with maintenance.......it will always look Good!!

Gary C is correct, you will get chips. But it does not have to be such a disaster/hassle. Just another labor of love with your G.

I painted my grill flat black while leaving the emblem chromed. First I sanded the entire grill with med grit sandpaper until all the chrome was hazy (at this point there is no going back). I then primed the entire grill with a self etching metal primer. This stuff sticks to the grill pretty good and bonds to the chrome. Allow plenty of time to dry (do not rush this step, follow the instructions exactly).

Then get the highest quality paint you can find. I initially used gloss black with a gloss clear coat and it just did not look right. I sanded it back down to the chrome and started over.

I suggest semi-flat black (that’s what my krylon can says). Then give it a good spray with multiple coats and you are done. Chips are fairly easy to deal with, take off the grill (use the opportunity to clean that impossible to reach area under the grill) hit the chip with a blast of primer, hand sand the area with fine sandpaper, and spray the whole grill again with semi-flat black.

A bonus is that each time you do this your grill becomes more resistant to chips (I assume it has to do with the multiple coats). Mine rarely chips anymore.

But it also makes sense to make a couple of calls to your local paint shops.

I attached a photograph. Although painting my grill was a labor of love, photoshoping that picture just isn’t.

Hero, you’re not helping the cause. Most members are willing to accept a little admonishment for the services of G35Drivers best search engine.

what cause? at least i don't just tell people to search. i posted pictures of what he was requesting. a black grille on an LR coupe. not on an IP coupe.

if i only said "search," then i could understand your point. but it has to be said at some point. people need to learn eventually. i did. and how did i learn? from getting flamed by others who told me to search.

when i say "SEARCH," it's nothing personal.

I think you may have misunderstood what I meant. I meant the cause of teaching members to use the search feature.

I know you do more than your share on this board.

use the image button. looks like a postcard or something..with a mountain on it and a postage stamp in the upper right corner of it. background is yellow. insert the ".jpg" ending link in there.

upload the pics to either photobucket, imageshack, or another free picture hosting site.
