From past experiences (3 cars), anything lower than 20% on the side windows seem way too dark, almost "toyish" (reminds me of the tinted windows on a Hot Wheels car). Plus driving at night can get sketchy at times. Also, I tint at the same level all the way around . . . tinting the rear/rear side windows different from the front side windows always looks odd (IMO).

I have 26% all-around ('06 IP) . . . just light enough to see that there REALLY is a driver, and also visibility while driving is not compromised too much. No complaints yet.

More importantly, make sure the tint is high quality . . . should be metallized and not dyed. Go with a tint professional, costs more, but the work is so much better . . . rule of thumb I live by is that if a place can tint AND install car stereos, no way buddy.

Hope this helps. Good Luck

Do any of you CA (esp. SoCal) cars have trouble with the cops?

Again, from experience (and friend's), officers are usually cool if you are running anything 48% or higher ("higher" I am referring to lighter), apparently most officers mistake it for factory tint (which is usually around 75-77%). This also supports my advice of a professional tint specialist . . . in most cases the job is done so clean that officers mistake it for factory.

At 20%-35% your playing with fire . . . usually other things like loud exhausts, tuner looks, etc. set them off. Anything lower should be considered a safety hazard.

Of course this refers to the front side windows only . . . the rears you can go dark and officers don't care too much . . . but if I'm not mistaken the legal level is 35%.

I have had friends get the "fix-a-ticket," for me I am still lucky . . . one piece of advice I can give is if you have dark tint on the front side windows and you see an officer, LOWER your windows!!! Will not guarantee you'll get cited, but they can't get ya' if they don't see it.
