Front License plate DIY

I am a NJ resident who didn't want to drill holes in my front bumper, didn't want to pay $60 for the strictlyz solution, and didn't want to get any tixx for no front tag. What I came up with is about a $10 solution (assuming you have the front plate bracket already).

You will need a piece of metal, about 3 feet long about an inch and a quarter wide and a bolt that will fit your tow hook in the front (16 mm if i remember). The bolt would ideally be about 6 inches long, but the longest I could find was 3 inches so I made do.

Take the metal and drill a hole in it to accept the bolt, then bend the metal into the shape shown in the picture above. Then attach the bracket to the plate holder using pop rivets or something similar (the key is to make it flat so that you don't scratch the bumper). Then just bolt it in place to the tow hook and attach the plate.

Also, remember to keep all the tools needed to take the plate off in your car so that if you ever need to be towed you can take it off!!

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

Thank you very much for sharing. This is what a forum is all about.

Can you install the plate upside down. I don't know wbout you guys but I think the plate sits too high. I still have mine off, but need to get them on.

Re: Front License plate DIY

WRAH,
Too high, too low, personally I just hate the front tag altogether, but I give cops enough reason to pull me over so I needed it on.

Anyway, I didn't try installing it upside down, but I am sure you could. Worst case you use a little sand paper to make the plastic plate holder fit flush upside down. Then again, I don't think you would get it much more than an inch lower so it may not be worth it.

Yeah I hate it too, but I'm going to have too when the reg. is switched from my old explorer and the rest of my temp tags expire.

How are you protecting the end of the screws that go through the plate from scraping the bumper?

Re: Front License plate DIY

The plate holder has spacers on the back that prevent the screws from touching the bumper, no special precautions were taken in addition to that.

Re: Front License plate DIY

As Merlin said, mine was in my trunk along with my second little welcome to infiniti package (black bag w/ my manual, 2 key chains, etc...), yup, they goofed and gave me two. What a deal, buy a $36k car and get not two, but 4 keychains!!!! Good thing the car is amazing also
