I have a CF hood from VIS on the accord that has been hazing/fading REALLY BAD, to the point where in certain spots, the clear is gone, and the hood feels like a chalkboard...
My brother and I attempted to fix it, but no dice.


Steps we took:
1) Wash hood
2) Wet Sand with 400 grit, plenty of times.
3) Wet Sand with 600 grit, plenty of times.
4) (When the hood is wet, it looks GREAT, like brand new)
5) This is where we fcked up, i think
6) We used clear coat from a can, small even amounts.
7) Let Dry
8) Wet Sand again with 600 grit (repeated steps 6,7,8 four times)
9) still doesnt have that nice shine...


advice please.

 

probably needs a to be clear coated. I had the same problem and I used clay bar and polished it looks much better but not completely satisfied.

 

so, what kind of polish did you use?

we wetsanded off all the shiny finish from the hood, so now its dull and we're trying to regain that shiny finish... are you saying that if i claybar it and polish it, its going to look somewhat shiny again? sounds "blah" to me. but i'll give it a twirl.

 

my advice is take it to a body shop and have em re-clear the hood and you should be good to go man

 

i HEARD its about 200 bucks or so to reclear... not worth it. Thought i'd use some elbow grease and do it myself, haha.. I guess its not gonna work this time.

you bought VIS shoulda gone Seibon. sorry I haven't been impressed by ANY VIS carbon products

 

Not to go off topic, but anyone have experience with Seibon CF hoods on a daily driver? Not a good idea?? If I don't get any responses here I'll probably just make a new thread for it. Thanks guys!

 

i got a ts on mine right now, and i dd most the time.. and its fine

 

actually, ive had that CF hood for 5 years, and recently started hazing.

but again, I have a VIS CF hood for my G35, and yeah... less than 1 year it started to haze. I must've got a lucky batch on the accord...

 

Proper care is KEY to the longevity of carbon fiber pieces.

To clear a hood should cost no more then $100 unless you have to sand or do other work...which may be the case for the OP. I'd say throw the hood away and get a Seibon hood.

 

do the same thing but clear at the bodyshop.. its different then the stuff in the can and buff and you'll get it to look good =)

 

cool, the sanding had been done... just trying to get that nice finish is what we're trying to do. I'll ask how much it costs to clear.

 

if it still has a yellow ish hue to it after the sanding then theres a kit to re-resin the whole hood somewhere

 

to get things shiny like the car came out of a body shop....you NEED 3M's RUBBING COMPOUND...

after applying several layers of clear coat (from the can) let it dry..

USE 800 grit sandpaper to get rid of major surface irregularities (cover large areas using long strokes, dont go back and forth over a small area)

then use 1200 grit sandpaper WITH WATER...make sure everything is smooth and rinsed...

get the rubbing compound and buff the s*** out of it...recommend using powertool with appropriate attachment.

then get any polishing liquid ie NuFinish apply a layer or two

then wax it..

wipe everything off, it should be shiny like new
