As with everything there are different scenarios, but for the most part i think many people w/ 2 brake lights have it b/c of the dealer and wanting that option added
When I ordered my G in 2005, there were 3 options in regards to the spoiler.
1) Factory aero kit complete. Included spoiler and diffusers installed at the factory in Japan. With this option, they delete the inside 3rd brake light. This is the option I went with because I couldn't stand having a dead light mount in the middle.
2) Port installed spoiler with diffusers. This is a more common option for non custom orders. Cars are mass produced without the spoiler. That's why you have the 3rd brake light. A certain amount of dealer orders get the spoiler and diffusers installed at the port. However, Infiniti never produced a new rear deck shelf replacement that specifically removed the light. Plus, it is a pain in the rear to remove that deck shelf in our car.
3) Dealer installed option for spoiler. This may or may not include the diffusers depending on how shady your dealer was. In this case, they take a non-spoiler G and install one. OEM or aftermarket. The trunks are pre-wired for the brake light. So depending on the install, you may have both wired up or just the spoiler.
Personal opinion (some which are agreed upon many here on the forums), if you have a spoiler option added, don't also wire the inside brake light. Sure more light gives that extra alert to the people following too close behind you. But it just doesn't look right having 4 brake lights. You end up with a massive rear-end of red. But that's personal opinion.
For those of you who want that light to be lit again, I'm sure it is as easy as plugging it back in. Not sure where though as I don't have one.
Hope that info helps any of you... I'm sure your lights aren't broken.
