There are multiple reasons, but the main one is price. The 250 and 300GT model V35 Skylines came in at the low end of the price spectrum. Cloth seats and minimal interior upgrades keep the cars cheap.

Another reason for cloth seats mimics the tendency for European people to get Bimmers and Mercs with full cloth interiors - cold weather. Cloth seats are definitely warmer in the wintertime, and like I mentioned above, they keep costs down.

Unfortunately, most people in the US possess the mentality that leather=luxury and you can't have one w/out the other. As such, pretty much every "luxury" brand car you buy here comes standard w/leather upholstery.

I'll have updates of my conversion soon as well.. My swap is on the top of my list to finish first however. The front end conversion isnt hard though, as long you have custom fabrication knowledge.

Very true and good points. I had put R33 Skyline GTR seats into my 240sx and by far they were one of the better seats I've sat in. I think they are composed of a micro-suede or something similar. Either way, did multiple 10+ hr drives in them and also took it to the track. They held me in a lot better than other seats. With the leather, I find there is noticeable slipping on hard turns.
