Sick of your dirty gray floor mats? DIY floor mat mod $3.99

Heres what I did.

1. Stick the floor mats in the washing machine, get them nice and clean.
2. Fill a big tub with enough hot water to completely submerge the floor mats.
3. Pour in the dye of your choice, I used about 2/3 bottle of RIT dye from Jo Anne fabrics (http://www.ritdye.com/)
4. Stick floor mats in the tub. The instructions on the bottle say to keep stirring whatever you're dyeing for 30-60 mins. I put some gloves on and agitated them for about 15 mins then left them to soak for another 45mins or so.
5. I hand washed them with detergent and hosed them off till the water ran clear then stuck them back in the washer just for the spin dry cycle.

I'd imagine you could dye them any color, as long as you start with a lighter colored mat, I Dyed my cell phone cover blue. Saved myself a couple hundred bucks doing it myself instead of buying new black floor mats. I still have to do the back mat.

Looks better in person. The whole dash is black along with the center console and some of the door panels, it fits in nicely.

got the same dye at home, just haven't had the time to do it...i also noticed it said not to dye rubber backed materials so i am glad to hear that yours came out ok...i just shampooed my mats the other day so hopefully MOnday i will join the $4 black floor mat club:biggthumpup:, helluva lot cheaper than buying new mats, i hate the stone carpet

i saw a thread on honda-tech that used this method, the op also did his entire molded carpet using a large trashcan, the results looked very good. I wouldnt mind doing it one day, I hate the grey carpet.

I don't bathe in a plastic tub on my patio.

That's just the way it ended up, the middle of the fuji didn't really take the dye.

got my back mats soaking in some rit right now, the fronts needed to be cleaned more before they went in the dye so i'll save those for another day:JAMIN:...just wish i had the time to gut the interior and do the whole carpet
