Painting bumper after small accident

I went to two auto body shops to get quotes. One came back w/ $988!!! And the other $859. These quotes are just for paint jobs (no plates/panels). There is a small dent, but you can barely see it so I was just going to let it be.

Anyhow the first shop told me their quote was so high b/c the paint is expensive . (My husbands car has major DENTS and the quote was $200 less than mine) The second shop said they had to take the bumper off to get into the joint (bumper meets side) so it doesnt rust. The rep also told me they had to basically paint the whole side of the car so the paint would match. Apparently Infiniti uses a 3 coat paint process w/ the ivory/white so thats why it costs so much.

Do these quotes sound way off?
I won't be going through insurance b/c I will be required to pay two deductibles (both cars on the policy were involved - which is bs) and it will be an at fault accident on my record.

Here are some pics I took w/ my cell:

Thanks guys. Any advice/suggestions you have are greatly appreciated.

You can get a custom bumper + it painted for around that price.. I paid $2K for a full paint job and this was including an area that was involved in an accident that messed up the wall and rear bumper so they had to fix it up as well.

I just recently got quotes from about 5 places to replace the bumper and it ranged from about 800-1000.

It seems kind of excessive if they are just going to remove a small dent and paint it.

Though, if I recall, taking off the rear bumper requires the removal of the tail lights, which does add to the cost of labor.

Personally I'd get more quotes.

Did you get into a collision with your husband?

Thanks guys
Yah I backed up into his car

We moved to BFE (Augusta, GA), so its hard to find places out here. I actually had to drive into SC to get the 2nd quote. Ill go to a few more places and see what they come up with.

Ill also look into custom bumpers, thanks for the tip.

Yes, pearl paint are a 3 stage process. Stick with the OEM bumper.

I mean, the car would look like azz with a custom rear bumper and a stock front. Just keep it simple. Stick with OEM.

No point in going thru all the trouble finding the right "custom" rear bumper. Then modding it to fit right, and all that. I mean, is your goal to "mod" the car or just get it fixed.

I work at a bodyshop and for something like that you are looking at

2.5 hr to take off and put back on
2-3 hr repair time
2.5 prime and paint time
cost of material
1 hr (to do test sprays so you do not need to paint the side)
So you are looking at 8 hr to repair your bumper at 65 a hr what comes out to $520 plus material. You should be able to get a quote from 500-615 I think that they are way off. If you have the estimates you could post them up for me to look at.

I do want to eventually drop the car and change out the tires but thats about it. I spent the last hour searching custom bumpers and such haha so you are right about keeping it OEM (or at least in my situation)

Thank you very much Simpson for offering to look at the quote. I have one with me and here are the numbers:

Parts: 0
Body Labor: 4.8hrsx$40hr = $192
Paint Labor: 9.1hrsx$40hr = $364
Paint Supplies: 9.1hrsx$29hr = $263
Sublet/Misc: $21

W/ tax: $859

On the first page it has comments and numbers along the right side which I of course cant understand, but here it goes:

Rpr RT Quarter panel
Add for Three Stage
REAR LAMPS

R&I RT Combo lamp assy
REAR BUMPER

Rpr Bumper cover
Add for Three Stage

R&I R&I bumper cover
Hazardous waste
Flex additive
Car cover
Mask overspray trunk lid jambs
Mask overpsray door jambs

The rep at the other shop said I could possibly get a lower rph ($38) but Id have to speak w/ the manager. I actually considered just sending a quick email offering $600 to complete repairs/paint, but I dont want to insult anyone and/or get a crappy job kwim?

Thanks again!!!

SHould be around $500-600 for repainting bumper alone. At least that's what I paid here to have the rear bumper removed and repainted. Looks like you're being charged for work on other parts as well.

Paint labor is a little high. They are wanting to repaint your quarter panel so they are able to match the color of the three stage paint. If you would like you could ask them that you do NOT want them to paint the quarter panel and you would be happy to pay a Hr for the painter to do a spray out. This is where they take three samples and spray them out on a card that is able to be held up to the car. This way they can make a good or perfect match with out painting the quarter panel. This should save you from 150.00 to 230.00 total. Good luck and let me know what they say or what you do.
