Stuck in manual mode

On Friday night when i went to park my car the shifter accidently shifted over into the manual mode. I tried to put it back into drive but the shifter was stuck. I cant take my keys out or put the car into park. I have 74k on the odometer and im not trying to see the dealer. I noticed it happened to quite a few ppl with these cars and it didnt take long for the car to be fixed. I was wondering does anyone know what the problem is.

I don't have my car right now but there should be a mechanism used to manually unlock the shifter. Its probably under a tiny piece of removable plastic somewhere near the shift ****. The G37 loaner has one.

As to the cause.

In the G37 its obvious (and labeled). I don't have my car right now so no pics. Just look for a tiny plastic cover that looks out of place near the shifter.

^Nothing on your center console says "shift lock" next to it? I have an 06 and its a small, black piece of plastic right above the "P" indicator next to the shifter. Use a small screwdriver to pop that off and you should be able to unlock it.

There is a plastic thing in the sifter plate that guides the shifter it might be broken.

You need to pop it off and look at it.

No it has not happened to me, but if you move the shifter up and done but not to the left then it's prob that.

Pull down the leather base on the shifter it unclips, then remove the pin (SAVE THIS) take the **** off. Then get a Flat head wrap it in a cloth and stick it under the whole plate, yea the whole plate this plate includes the ash tray that big piece. and pry it up, it should unclip. Look underneath you should see that plastic piece I am talking about.

While that whole plate is off can you move the shifter?
