DIY: Headlight Restoration

This is your headlight in the weather for over 10 years

The concept is that you basically wet-sand the surface with varying grits and then you seal the headlight
with with a 1:1 mixture of mineral spirits and helmsman clear gloss spar urethane by spreading it with a folded up blue Scott shop towel.
The urethane mixture contains UV blockers that protects the finish, pretty much a clear coat.

DIY:

1. mask around headlight from getting scratch.
2. wet sand headlight with 600-800 grit throughly
3. wet sand 1000 grit throughly
4. optional 1500 or 2000 grit
5. clean it throughly, preferably with mineral spirit
6. optional rotary buff with buffing compound (for this headlight i did not use rotary buffing)
7. clean once again with mineral spirit.
8. mix 1:1 helmsman clear gloss spar urethane, indoor/outdoor with mineral spirit
9. use the scott "blue" shop towel and make a 1" x 1" square
10. dip that into the mix and apply lightly over the headlight, make sure to overlap
11. let dry overnight

Don't you think 600 is a low number to start with, risk scuffing the plastic too deep? Wouldn't starting with 1000, then 1500, 2000 do the trick? And personally I've followed the sandpaper with Mother's plastic polish, that's it.

The problem with G headlights is that even when you do a restoration, the haze comes right back. And its getting real tiring lol

nope. 600 is fine... although you can start out at 1000 grit, you will find it will take you much longer to sand.

I use plastix polish with my mothers powerball on a drill and works fine for me, keeps my headlights looking brand new and takes 3 minutes, no sandpaper necessary.

^^ i've heard of them. they are the ones that the haze coms back after a couple weeks.

remember, my procedure, it's the helmsman clear gloss spar urethane with mineral spirit is what make the headlights last. they act as a clear coat -- like a paint clear.
