Cracked Windshield

Well, a flying rocked hit my windshield this morning and cracked it. It made two small indentations and cracked out in a star shaped pattern--they are pretty small but annoying nonetheless. Is there any kits to fix small cracks, and if so, do they work? Do I need to replace it? How much do all these cost?

Thanks,

Hockeyplay95

Quick, Easy, FREE fix:

Insurance.

Contact or check out your insurance companies website or something. They will usually repair or replace any cracked windshield for absolutely free, or in some cases some companies have a small deductable.

The cracks usually will only get bigger, so no matter what you do about it, act soon.

and then you can pay a much higher premium after 1 or 2 claims, yea, very worth it (esp. since the windshields are worth ~1500)

Check with your insurance. Depending on your deductible, determine if it's worth replacing. $1500 for a windshield? Damn you planning on getting bulletproof windshield or something? When my windshield cracked, I contact these people (http://www.safelite.com). Quoted me about $225 to replace with the factory moldings & installation. They even go to your home or business place. If you decide to fill in the crack, it'll range from $20-30. It's not as noticable if done correctly. Good luck

If it's not cracked all the way through from outer to inner surface, I'd just have it filled in. I have a similar star-shaped crack from a rock on the freeway and will be filling it in myself.

my windshield was hit by a flying rock and it caused a small crack, probably 1 cm in diameter. I had the little crack patched by a guy recommended by my mechanic. The crack now is barely visible and the crack hasnt grown any larger.

If your rate jumps because of a windshield claim, then you have crap insurance. That and correct me if I'm wrong, but you shouldn't have to pay a deductible for a windshield, because most "mainstream" don't: Allstate, Progressive. Just an FYI!

Check the yellow pages....I had to 2 small cracks in mine and had them fixed for free. Most shops will do a free windshield "repair" to get customers for later. Just tip the guy a few bucks and everyones happy.

I got a rather badly cracked windshield (damn trucks) and geico. They told me that windshield crack is a "no-fault" damage (so insurance doesn't go up, hopefully) which gets covered under "comprehensive" insurance. Therefore I would have to pay the comprehensive deductible in order to replace the windshield. That's like 1000 for me, which sucks. And yes, local dealership quoted 1200 or so for the windshield replacement.

The thing is though, geico told me that they will cover the repair only in case whoever repairs it do it themselves rather then inviting some third party professionals. That's called "call-in" repair or smth like that. I called dealership again and they told me that they indeed invite some folks to do the job. Therefore geico won't cover a repair in the dealership.

My question is then - is it like that with all "BIG" insurance companies or it's only geico that is so f**** up?

If you're going to get it repaired (about $30 around here), do it ASAP. Any temperature changes, hotter or colder, can cause it to spread (especially if you park outside at all). We waited a few days with another car, and it spread about a foot.

I think it probably depends on the type of the hit - i got mine in november and couldn't fix it yet (have to wait until spring) - it hasn't spread at all. My dad continually gets dinged (we live in rock central up here) and they havn't spread after almost a year.
