folding rear seat wont close?!

Searched and searched, but couldn't find anything: I cant get the rear seat to lock shut. I just recently got the car, and after searching tonight, i realize its been unlocked since i bought it, the red button has been up the whole time! This is a little disturbing since Ive had my son in the back several times, thank god no accidents! I tried gradually slamming it harder until I felt uncomfortable, and I noticed the red pull string, and the trunk release lever seem to do nothing. I'm hoping I don't have to pull the seats out, because I just spent a whole Saturday rewiring the sound system, and fixing rattles. Any help would be appreciated.Thank you.

Make sure one of the rear seat belt buckles isn't in the way. That's what gets me every time.

Would love to hear any success stories about stopping rattles.

Rear seat buckles aren't in the way, but thanks for the reply.

For the rattles, i used some double sided tape some places, and a dime wrapped in electrical tape under the rear deck lol.
