Overhead ambience lighting complete/pics
I've got a much simpler solution that I've been using for 2 years now.
I bought a pack of Amber/orange Varad Hyper LED's. They come prewired with just a power and ground, so they're already set for 12V. The LED is attached to a small plastic square with double sided tape. I took the varad LED, and sanded it down to remove the "hot spot," then I cut about 1/2" off of a cheap white bic stick pen. I painted the entire bic pen piece black, as well as the plastic square black, and then squeezed the LED into the pen. I don't think I needed any glue at all as the LED was almost a perfect fit into the LED. I then tapped power from my cig lighter ring so that the light comes on only when the headlights are on. I used the double sided tape to adhere to the back of the rear-view mirror.
The Bic pen hides the light. The only light you can see is when it's on your console. Because it's behind the mirror, you can't see it, and from outside the car, it's all black like the mirror and is basically invisible too. VERY happy with how it turned out, especially since it's easily removeable and cost like $6 to make. If you want to dim the led a little if it's too bright, just solder in a resistor to adjust the brightness to what you want.

As I posted above, the Varad Hyper LED's in Orange match pretty much perfectly. They're a little pricey, but come pre-wired with resistors and are easy to install. You can find them all over E-bay. Just search for Varad Hyper LED. Come in packs of 4.
