Taillight disassembly

I have an 06 Sedan and I want to pull the lens off of the taillight.
I've been searching for a couple of hours and cannot find any information about how to take the taillight casing apart. Is it the same as with the headlights? Just stick them in the oven for 10 mins? I don't want to damage the LED's.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea. In all my time on here I have never seen anyone dissemble the taillights.

If its anything like the coupe, you have to dremel them apart

Lude, how do you put it back together, if you dremel it? Is there a special glue? The cover looks like it was melted together with the base.

Why did you want to do it anyway?

I haven't actually done it myself, I just remember thats how some of the other members did it, which is why I haven't taken mine apart. Try a search and you should be able to find something. My guess would be a clear polyurethane would be best for a sealant

I threw some overlays over my turn signals to extend out the lines from the trunk. I want to turn my current turn signals into driving lights (look at my avatar). That part is easy, but I still need turn signals, so I want to put leds into the reflector portion of our brake lights.

Look at LE-R20 and that is similar to what I want to install

I would also be very interested to see how these come apart. I'll be needing to do this soon also...

I asked a couple of people who did it, but they said they couldn't remember how they sealed it back up...

Silicone and JB weld would be your friends.

Will those stand up to the elements? (plastic JB weld, by chance?)

Edit: thanks for the help and looks guys. Looks like I should hit this up after I get the car re-tinted.

You have to use a dremel and cut very carefully around the edge. JB weld works well. I used this technique of dremeling and jb weld on some lexus gs taillights I cleared out and it worked out great. You just want to be really careful when applying the jb weld. You dont want it to seep out the edges cause that stuff doesnt look pretty when its wet and it doesnt get any better when it dries. If some does seep out you can always use some black paint to make it look like part of the seem. Ive taken my tails off my coupe a couple times and almost started but resisted because it would have to be a VERY VERY close cut to the lense all the way around to have it not show through in the housing it all. Since the taillight lenses do not have any reflectors all the cuts made to the housing will be clearly visible through the red lense.
I was going to do this to sand down the chrome in the inside and paint it matte black.

Silicone should work, that's what they use to glue aquariums together and if it's good enough to hold in hundreds of pounds of water, it should work quite well for a taillight assembly. Good Luck with your project!
