I still have my original 03 headlights. I'll be going with either 5000K or 6000K bulbs. If I do upgrade to 06 headlights, the new HID setup should still work on them.

Now that I looked more closely at it, using those in a reflector housing would be a horrible idea, the bulbs don't have the ceramic glare shield so it will blind everyone else on the road. I don't recommend those at all. Also, d2r and d2s bulbs are not interchangeable so you can't use them on projector headlights unless you do some modification to the bulbs which will likely void your warranty

They are completely interchangeable. The only difference is the glare shield thats present on the D2R and not the D2S. The base and everything else about them are exactly the same. You can use either bulb in either style of headlight but a D2S bulb in the old style housing will blind everyone and a D2R in the new housing will have diminished light output.

If everyone got 4 ballast for lows and fog/hi then you only need 1250 people

Thats still only $60 for 4 ballast though lol.

The problem is almost no aftermarket d2r bulbs have the glare shield, and unless the bulbs are notched for both d2r and d2s, then they are not interchangeable. OEM d2r bulbs cannot be used in d2s without modification

i've been thinking about converting the fogs /highbeams to hid, but i'm thinking that it might be difficult to run the drl, i assume that running half power to the ballasts won't halve the output of the bulbs (much like a fluorescent tube), any options there?

Very bad idea. Any plug and play HID kit not meant for HID reflectors such as our foglights/highbeams will cause significant glare for other drivers on the road and would be a safety hazard. IMO it is completely inconsiderate to install such a kit. If you are really concerned about increased lighting, then you should look into a projector retrofit which will provide more output with a significantly improved beam pattern

well, good to know, didn't think it would be as much of a problem since the fogs are aimed so low, i know what you're talking about though, i see it every day.
say i did find a kit meant for reflectors such as the fog/HID, or did a projector retrofit, can they still serve as DRLs?

thanks for the info so far.

My buddy just got his 55w kit installed and it's WAY brighter than the 35w kit he previously had. I have ordered a D2R kit for my car.

Did you find out if the 55w d2r bulbs have the ceramic shielding on the glass? From the pics it doesn't

I don't think you understand my question, alot of aftermarket companies sell "d2r" bulbs which aren't really d2r bulbs, they don't have the ceramic shielding on the glass, they are basically d2s bulbs with a different slot cut in them to fit into d2r headlights
