Replacing HID Bulbs...questions

I don't know if anyone here has done a replacement of the stock HID's...but I have a few questions:

A) Can just the Bulb be replaced like the fogs...OR do you also need to replace the ballast also?

B) Would increasing the Temp/wattage increase the distance for me...or just make the road brighter?

I don't want to start messing with the stock wiring harness for this modification if possible..

Last Question:
What bulb/recommedations do you have?
the Price/locations/dealers to purchase.....

thanks to all in advance...Dennis

Re: Replacing HID Bulbs...questions

I'm only going to anwser what I know....

No you don't need to change the ballast when you change the bulb! This would cost like 600+ if you did!

Bulb temp in kelvin, can change with wattage, but you can't buy different watt bulbs for HID, like a normal bulb. (Thats up to the ballast, but most if not all are 35watts)~(A retro-manufct. makes a ballast you can change the wattage, but that requires changing a lot of things.) You can change the temp/colour by differernt gass mixes, but thats up to the bulb you buy, and its coating(some 10,000K bulbs are blue)

Higher K temps don't = more lumens/light ouput! But a slightly high temp bulb might give you the illusion of more light. This you might want.

Not saying they are the cheapest, but you can find more HID bulb info at www.suvlights.com

Re: Replacing HID Bulbs...questions

I've read that for bulbs with colour temps above 6000K, actually put out less lumens. Blue light results in more 'glare' as interpreted by the human eye, which many report as 'brighter'.

This is the same reason that so many drivers, especially older drivers, complain about HIDs on most HID equipped cars, even though the beam patterns are actually more focussed and have sharper cut-off patterns to cut out light above beam level.

Re: Replacing HID Bulbs...questions

I'm mainly concerned with lighting up a greater distance...
I do alot of night driving and would be much happier if I could get another 50feet of distance to be well lit....
A few times I just missed hitting a nice size pothole....
and I don't want to cause any accidents by swerving irradically.

It seems that the problem is the housing and not the bulb....
maybe I'm way off base...but my last I35 headlights seem more focused and brighter...

And WRAH...I know its comming so don't flame me about not be able to see that well because of my age....lol

Make sure your lights are aligned to the max height spec as well. They come from the factory set to the minimum spec'd height, at least mine did. Made a big difference when I spent some time resetting the height. The funny thing is, when they were lower, I got flashed a few times. Since I adjusted them, nada.

Re: Replacing HID Bulbs...questions

I think the dealer adjusted mine! My adjustment caps were off(I have a '04 1103'd made) and my lights almost have a parallel to the ground. Even cut off!

Even though your old and can't see well doesn't mean I'm going to pick on you for being really really really old and not seeing well anymore, because you are, like really really really old. OKAY!

At night I can't seem well either! Maybe its the car, and not our ages!

Hey look in the DYI section. I did the install. You dont need any modification to anything. The blub can be changed very easyly

As for the temp. This is how is works

The higher in Kelvin Scale you go the darker the light gets which means the less road you will see.

Example our Xenons right now are at 4100 K (K = Kelvin). I put 8000 K. My lights are now purple but i lost a little bit of sight. Not alot just a little. My buddy put 6500 K and he got a more bluer light than stock but nothing compared to my purple. He also lost some light but again its real minor.

I paid almost 150 a blub. I got a D2S bulb. Our stock blub is D2R. The difference is there is a black part covering the bulb it self.

So check out the DYI for more info.

Re: Replacing HID Bulbs...questions

You also get more light with the
D2S3200-lumens vs D2R-2800-lumens

How about glare? Are you getting any more glare, post pics!!!!

since you out 'projection' bulbs, in our 'reflector' lights....

Re: Replacing HID Bulbs...questions

Thanks for sparing me the flame WRAH...lol

Since it seems the bulb replacement for the stock will not really increase the distance of lighting...

Has anyone installed driving lights behind the front lower grilles on the coupe bumper?

I wonder if a good set of driving/not fog light(s) would be a better fix. I do not know if they still make, (pardon the expression if its dated)...PENCIL BEAM lights any longer, but they sure were bright and quite illegal in New Jersey....some ridiculous power like either 100,000 or 200,000 candle power is what I think they used to call it...
I've seen the Japanese mod from NISMO for the HID fog conversion kit...but its way too much money and probably the first thing to go in a front bumper smash....
any other ideas? thanks to all
