my last Q for those who have done quad retros
Ok, I thought I had everything worked out in my brain to wrap up my project, but I just want to make sure on two things to check that I am not going insane here.
1. When you turn on your high-beams, ALL that it does is give power to the solenoid to pull the cutoff shield down, right? It doesn't also make the d2s bulbs brighter or anything, does it?
2. When I read up on this stuff initially, I was under the impression that I needed some sort of universal harness to connect my new set of ballasts directly to the batteries power. This harness has a relay and switch that connects to the old foglight circuit so that the new projectors only come on when I enable that foglight switch in the vehicle. I was told this was necessary because the power/current running to the old foglight circuit was not necessarily adequate enough to properly power the ballasts. SO, I just want to make sure that it is NOT as simple as me just using the old foglight wires to plug into my new ballast, and that I DO have to use this universal harness thing that I bought.
Thanks guys, this project is almost done, I just don't want to make any last minute mistakes getting it on the car.

1. Yes.
2. Ideally that is the way it should be done with a dedicated relayed harness with the original fog wiring triggering the relay. I have found thought that the wiring is of the same gauge for both the OEM ballast and the foglight wiring which I concluded should be adequate for direct wiring. IvoryGT should be able to confirm that.

It would be great if I could simply use the foglight wiring because then I would not have to deal with having extra wires running around, and to my battery itself.
Hopefully others running quads can confirm if this is what they did and how long they've ran it like this?
Thanks for the help redlude

i made a harness with relays which is connected directly to the battery. When you turn on the projector hid retrofit fogs, it's only for providing a signal to turn on the fogs.
You don't want to over draw the current through the stock harness and burn it out.

I used a harness, but it's because I needed a relay so that the fogs won't turn off when I flip the high beam (solenoid). I've ran that setup for 4+ years now.

E_K can you explain what you connected your relay to? I just found out that if you enable the hi beams that the fogs go out on the 06 lights. So if I was using the fog wiring directly to the ballast or just to power a relay, either way the lower projectors would turn off if I flip on hibeam.
I wanted them to stay on so I had quad hi beam. I already have my solenoids wired up so that all 4 cutoff shields go down, but this fog turning off when hibeams are turned on was unexpected and I don't know what to do! >:/

Hmmm, didn't know that the fogs also turn off when high beams are on for the 06 lights. I guess that makes sense since they probably only changed the wiring harness on the lights, and left internal relays the same for 03-05 vs 06+.
I bought a H4 wire harness that allowed both fog and high beams to be on at the same time. Otherwise you'll get the problem that you describe. High beam on = fog off.
I'm not good with electronics actually, but I think the basic idea is that there is a diode that allows power to still get to the fog + wire when the high beam is on.

^ Yea ok, good call.
In the meantime after I posted that, i figured there must be a relay in the car itself somewhere that tells the car to cut the fog circuit when the hi-beams go on.
so my solution is either going to be to disable that relay after i find it (i msg'd KPierson i figured he would know exactly where it is) or try a diode thing like you mentioned to keep the power flowing.
in the meantime, i have been searching thru KPTechnologies foglight mod and the install on it trying to gather information on the BCM and IPDM in our cars too.
ill update with what route i chose to solve this final problem.
thanks for the feedback, it's helping as always

I am in the process of doing a quad retrofit right now on my headlights and was wondering if this was the relay you used for the fog light projector. I am assuming if I use this relay and then connect the power + to the old fog light + it shouldn't turn off when I use my high beams correct? Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated!!!
