Bulb Differences?

I'm a total noob when it comes to lamps, HID's etc.

I had PIAA's on my previous car so I looked up on their web site and they said the replacements for our low beam lights were their H4's.

When I checked on Calvin's replacement bulb list, i saw that the low beams are HID D2R. so my question is, what's the difference? if i replace them with the PIAA's, would that be bad? brighter? etc.

03-05 Headlights use D2R for their headlights. 06-08 use D2S.

D2R is for reflective headlamp designs. D2S is for projectors.

Is there a way to differentiate the bulbs just by looking at them? My guesses are D2Rs have only 2 openings where as D2Ss have 3?? Can someone correct me if i'm wrong?

i think you mean the tabs that hold the bulb into place at the bottom right. i have an 05 and D2C bulbs fit perfectly.

D2R will have part of the bulb covered with an opaque shroud, to keep them from glaring and emitting light upwards...

D2S bulbs are completely exposed with no covering, since the cutoff shield in the projector limits the vertical light output.

you can GIS d2r and then d2s to see what i mean

The notches are different and D2R bulbs have a ceramic coating on them.

^ u can replace just the bulbs but 8000k-10000k is way too blue.. unless you never drive at night, i wouldn't recommend anything bluer than 6000k b/c you lose a ton of output
