Any chance you measured the board while you were at it?
Rather than trying to repair the OEM board I'm thinking of just replacing it with an LED array like you did or, more likely, a COB LED like this one that's 100mm x 10mm:
There are other sizes available and I'd like to get the one that's closest in size / largest that will fit.
I've removed the HMSL and measured it. The inside measurements of the housing are 152mm x 21mm. The plastic insert where the LED circuit board mounts is 150mm x 19mm.
anyone know what size the two screws are that hold the led's in place in the plastic housing for the 3rd brake light? I took mine apart and was going to install the new led circuit board and realized the screws are no longer in the ziplock bag I had everything in.
I know this is an old thread, but I tried the diode replacement trick to get the led strip to light up again and it's working like a charm, long may it last. It's a little tricky to solder the replacement 3A diode to the board, because the existing solder mounds are pretty tiny but it's well worth the effort and if you don't have a solder kit, you can pick one up from Amazon.com for less than $25. Anyway, thanks to all who posted this awesome fix!
One of these days I just need to do this, I hate the CHMSL on the G (later coupes got it in the back window) but at least I would have the option to plug it in if needed.
Right now the whole thing is sitting in a box in an upstairs closet
