2003 G35 Coup tail light: Dismantlement
THIS IS HOW "I" WENT ABOUT TAKING MY TAIL LIGHTS APART AS TO PAINT
THE CHROME INLET, on my 03 G35 Coup.
CAUTION: Take this on at your own risk. It looks ugly from the back depending on tools used... but it was a first attempt. Who can see back anyway though hah.
First off... I had so much trouble trying to find anything related to this kind of project.
I had read a post about how someone tried to bake the lights but turns out...
they are plastic welded together(pressed) FFFUUUUUU- Someone mentioned
that another member cut the housing open. So the project began...
First I will show you pictures as I went about this scary project with captions.

^^Stock nothing done

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1183.JPG
^^Used a pneumatic grinder to cut/melt the red plastic housing (not the lens)
Okay once you FINALLY cut the housing open, DO NOT try and rip the chrome
inlet out. Tabs hold it in place as shown next. (Used a putty knife to put the tabs BACK
into the housing starting from the parking light, working along the bottom, to the turn
signal)
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1184.JPG
^^The tabs have the rectangle holes in them. Lift gently with some force(don't be a
girl about it) and peak in to see the first tab all the way to the left. Use a flat head or
putty knife to push it back into the housing.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1185.JPG
^^this tab kinda pops its self off... once i got the first two it was easy(ish) to just
pull the rest out(be a girl about this part here, that chrome plastic is brittle)
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1186.JPG
^^Top tabs. They popped free with ease.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1187.JPG
^^ remove the LED plastic housing/mount out of the way.(pretty straight forward)
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1188.JPG
^^HELL YEAH!!! (Don't forget you gotta do it all over again )
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1189.JPG
^^Okay this pissed me off... the lenses have clips that you pinch to free... but
they are held in with a plastic weld or something... I ended up just using the grinder
used to cut the housing. It worked... moving on...
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1193.JPG
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1192.JPG
^^Used a nice satin black from wally world. mmmmm has a great finish. not to
flat, not to glossy
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1194.JPG
^^Now insert the lenses woot! its looking sweet. Wish there were clear shields
and red lenses... damn that would be sick wouldn't it?
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1197.JPG
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31945651/Ta...t/IMG_1195.JPG
^^Now put the LEDs back put the screws back that held the chrome insert in place.
And i used JB weld along the seam (only in spots so i could open it up again with ease
if needed) and then silicone along the entire seam to close it completely.
DONE! Kinda... now the next one... ill upload day time pictures and when
the other is done, in coming days. Take as much time as you can. Love the light now and really love it later! I like the outcome a lot. Some said you wouldn't notice unles next to another G, but it stands out to me. Looks smoked but more interesting. Id be interested in trying another pair with halos installed Lots of ideas here.
CAUTION: Looks ugly from the back of the housing. But I used an abrasive as F****
grinder. Try other tools out and post pics!
