Question about lights.

Hey,
Did an intensive search, and looked through many many pages but didn't get the answer that I was looking for.

My question is, the low beam uses D2R which is HID Xenon? Also, the fog/high beam, uses the H4 type bulb, and is that just a regular bulb or a xenon HID bulb?

If i buy the D2R and the H4 type bulbs, is it just plug & play or do i need some kind of wiring harness or something...

thanks!

question #1 - Yes, low beam is a 35W D2R Xenon Bulb. That requires an HID/Xenon ballast that charges the gas to produce the light. The ballast is part of your headlight assembly,

question #2 - high/fog is a standard H4 bulb 60/55 W.

question #3 - it is plug and play with the respective bulbs. buy an H4 and plug into the high/fog. just ensure wattage is the same and you are good to go. buy a D2R bulb rated at the correct wattage and you are also good to go.

And I just wanted to add to what drsifu1 said. The D2R bulbs are HID bulbs, where as the H4 bulbs are a dual fillament halogen bulb. Both are entirely different type of lighting systems and the bulbs can not be interchangeable. However, the H4 halogen bulb can be replace with an aftermarket H4 HID conversion kit, which includes the HID Ballast, igniter and wiring.

let me also add that this is a prime example of what a good post and good response looks like.

1) original poster placed the post/question in the appropriate forum
2) the person who responded didn't have a smart *** comment, but simply replied to the question
3) another person followed up with not a simple repeat of the first answer, but added additional info he thought would be helpful.

ladies and gentleman, those three posts above are the perfect example of what this forum COULD look like.

pretty novel idea, huh?

sorry for the rant. this post is a perfect example of what doesn't belong.

Hey,
Thank you for the straight foward answers!
Any H4 recommendations that will match pretty closely to the Phillips 6000K?
Thanks again.

hmmm...the classic follow-up question

protocol states that all questions must be asked in the original post

H4 recommendations are wide and varied. this is where the search button helps. the old timers use sylvania silverstars.

the newer kids use anything from PIAA to Motec (?) to Phillips which I believe make ultinons??? you get the idea...there are lots to choose from.

1) google H4 bulbs and find the companies that make them
2) come back to the forum and search those brand names
3) review the posts and look for pictures and find one you like
4) PM the owner and ask him where he got the lights
5) order the bulbs
6) install them and enjoy
7) if you don't like how they look, go back to step 1 and repeat

best of luck

BRAVO!!! Very nicely done!

Just a few additions. You were close, its spelled "Mtec".

For 6000k, Silverstars are beautiful, but might not be blue enough (depending on the companies version of their 6000k bulb). Silverstars would be a great match for factory 4100k HID bulbs. PIAA has two bulbs that you might want to look at. The PIAA Plazma, and the Plazma GTX. The Plazma bulbs have a nice tint of blue, with a slight touch of purple, which gives it a very clean HID look. However, this purple hue can make or break a perfect marriage with your aftermarket HIDs. The GTX runs at a higher wattage of around 90w (instead of the normal 55w bulb) which gives a more intense light output. The GTX has a nice blue color to it, but it does not have the purple hue anymore. Mtec, imo, is just you're regular hyper white bulb. Maybe just a little above average, but nothing special.

I have a friend who knows ALOT about aftermarket bulbs. I asked him to do a write up about it all in another forum. Click on the link below to read his thread about aftermarket bulbs, their temps, some comparisons....
