Ambience lighting

I have owned a couple of BMW's, and I loved the amber led lighting that cast a very subtle light over the console. The lighting was installed in either a trim piece on the headliner or the bottom of the rearview mirror. Has anyone tried to do the same in the G?I'm looking into it as it seems to be the perfect place for this kind of lighting, having the power already available in the mirror assembly.Feedback appreciated...I'll let you know what I find out.

I too have had several BMW's with this feature. I also asked this question 2 years ago on another site. I still have not heard of anything like the BMW setup.

Acura's have this also with two blue LEDs. If you have the homelink mirror, it's not too hard to do. The hardest part would be having a clean look. You can drill holes and just have 1mm of the LED tip poking through, but it wouldn't look right without a beveled ring surrounding the LED.

Some car alarms companies sell broken up parts, so you can buy an LED from an alarm that has a nice clean bezel.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try to find a mirror assembly from a friend of mine who works for Infiniti, and look further into the install...

Found location for overhead LED

For those who may want overhead LED ambience lighting, the location I have found to be the best and least complicated would be in the swing down compartment(sunglass holder)forward the rearview mirror. Two 1/4" holes could be drilled with a 5mm LED lamp holder inserted. The wiring and power is easily accessed from the panel that houses the overhead push lights. I'll try this install and post the outcome itnf...

Here's the thing... that would be the easiest way to get it done. But I don't think that would be the "cleanest" look. I prefer setups that look like they came from the factory. Unless I am picturing it wrong, I see an obvious LED poking through the sunglass holder, which would look odd. I still think you should try the rear view mirror. Drill the holes in the back half of the mirror, so everyone inside the car wouldn't be able to see them. They'd just see the light shining down. But then you would have to look into the angle depending where you want the light to shine.

I also wouldn't use a 5MM LED. I think they are too big for this project. Go with 3MM.

^+1. I am not certain if the mirror spilts apart but if it does i would drill a 1/4" may a little large hole and cut a piece of clear plexi in it that is about 1/2" think drill into the plexi and secure the LED in the hole. Maybe use a thick piece of mirrored plexi so you the LED reflects down better.

Go to a sign shop that works with plexi and buy some of their scrap to work with. I am sure they can sell you some acetone to use for bonding. Trust me it will hold very well and the capillary effect will pull the acetone down into the hole you drill for the LED and soften the plexi to the point that it will sort of polish the hle for you. Or oyu can use a butane torch and heat polish the hole then use the acetone to secure the LED.
