G35 exhaust note
Hey guys, so I don't know much about upgrading cars, and I couldn't find anything to answer this question so here I am.
I'm looking at buying a G35 6mt, either a 03,04, or 07 (I hear the 05/06 have oil burning problems). And eventually I'd like to modify it, but I love the g35 exhaust note, is there any kind of modifications I should avoid that might spoil it? Or is it pretty unavoidable that I"m going to lose it once I start modifying?

Nah, man, it'll only get better (unless you get a cheap shitty exhaust). The actual sound has to do with intake flow and exhaust flow, but more importantly the valve lash and cam lift. You will most likely never deal with cam or valve upgrades unless you start getting seriously into making your car a race car. Get a high flow air filter (like a k&n or similar), a Z tube, a motordyne plenum spacer and a nice cat back exhaust, and your car will not just sound AS good, but even better. Like an even smoother and louder version of the stock sound. Plus you'll gain a few HP to boot.

Honestly, all the good aftermarket exhausts sound outstanding. Motordyne, NISMO, HKS, Invidia, Amuse, Magnaflow, etc. Any of these would be great choices (the only good company I would stay away from is Borla. It's a good quality company, but just sounds 'ok' on the G). Just stay away from top speed or anything that has the word "replica" in the name. At the same time tho, (as I said before) pay attention to the intake side. Just doing a Z-tube, high flow filter and plenum spacer may give you enough extra noise to satisfy your desires.

Phil, before you get into modifications consider buying the "Right G35" first! Try finding the newest year with the least amount of miles. How about a G37, I haven't heard of them having oil consumption (OC) issues? Replacing our motors is a major nightmare and just because Nissan used cheap Chinese piston rings! Exhaust, most of the restriction is in those OE converters. Replacing them with high flow cats (HFCs) will make any exhaust sound better,and you'll never lose that beautiful sound! What ever you buy Phil, "Enjoy the Ride!"

I'm not a fan of the way the G37 looks. I really love the g35. Also I read on some other forum that if you replace the piston heads with forged something or other (I'd have to go look it up) that you can eliminate the oil problem (if your car is one of the unlucky ones)
Also for the record I'm not interested in making my exhaust louder I'm saying I love the note as it is, and I'd like to leave it the way it is if there's no performance gain

I would honestly recommend a 37 or atleast the 35 HR sedans. Just cause if you ever look into being faster, you won't fall flat on your face being stuck with the DEs.

Nothing wrong with a chip in the G. I got a whole bag of ruffles in the passenger seat. They're ridged for her pleasure.
2. DE's are a great engine during it's time (But overrated in its power number). But in terms of N/A power from bolt-ons. The gainz are minimal. And you'll be comparing it against newer cars too. You'll feel left behind. We just don't react to mods as well as a Honda would. Atleast with the HR or 37VHR you're starting with a better engine to boot.
The ugly truth is a Toyota Camry can smoke us. Let that sink in.

Intakes don't do ****.
Catbacks just make noise.
Replacing cats are good gainz.
Plenum spacer (+MREV2 if you're rev-up) is decent gainz as well
Slap in a tune and you're looking at maybe 20-30 extra RWD HP versus stock (With the mods). Considering our weight, that's nothing. A tune alone is $500

Turbo/SC the DE. You're looking at a ticking time bomb unless if you want to spend the amount of the car again getting the engine rebuilt.
Well to be honest my heart is set on the g35, I've wanted one ever since I was 16 and I'm not desperate to upgrade it. I'd be content with upgrading suspension, adding low stress performance changes, and sticking with that. And maybe some body changes.
