G35 non-rev up oil consumption
Do non-rev up VQ35DEs consume oil like the rev-up engines? I'm asking because I've driven about 2000 km since I changed the oil on my 2006 AT coupe and the oil level was down towards the bottom of the stick just above the L mark. I added about 1/3 to 1/2 a quart to bring it back up to the H range. My car has just over 100k km but if it needs this much oil now then I'm calculating that it would need a quart to a quart and a half of oil between oil change intervals of 7500-8000 km. Is this acceptable for a non rev-up VQ? I'm presently using 5W-30 Castrol Edge.
Yes. Rev-up consumes oil from day one due to bad piston rings. Non Rev-up consumes oils once you've racked up some miles. Rev-up will tend to consume more oil than non rev-up but over time non rev-up can get pretty bad depending on how careless the previous owners were.
The records I have indicate that the oil was changed regularly with synthetic 5w-30.
They will all consume oil, each motor will be at a different rate...no one is immune...no one is safe...no one gets out alive...no one will get in the way of what ifiwfhoifhwfh oops Alicia Keys moment there
Changing your oil does not prevent you from oil consumption. Most issues happen when people do not monitor their oil levels and show up like 2 or 3 quarts low.
THIS. They can all potentially burn oil. It's just that the rev-ups were so bad that Infiniti put out a Tech Service Bulletin on the issue and replaced a few engines, that's why you hear about the rev-ups so much. The reality is that I personally know more people with 04 models that burned like crazy than I do people with rev-ups burning oil.

Did you change your own oil or bring it in somewhere to have it changed?
Oil consumption problems are much more rare on the non-Rev Up engines but not unheard of. Keep in mind that all gasoline-powered 4-stroke engines are susceptible to burning more oil as they stack on miles and age... it's not something that is specific to our cars, but the rev-up motors occasionally had the more severe problems as a result of design and manufacturing defects where some were burning through a whole quart or more of oil per 1000 miles when the engines only had like 15-25K miles on them (in some cases).
That sounds a bit extreme. Have you checked the PCV valve?
Check for oil leaks all around and under the engine. A catch can may help but it depends on how bad the actual burning is. Compression test would give you a good idea on the condition of those piston rings.
As I see it there are multiple ways to lose oil in the VQ:
-Piston Rings
-PCV Valve
-Valve Covers
-Rear seal
-Oil Cooler O ring
-Rare case although it can happen is bad valve stem seals.
Hope this helps!
