Probably nothing would ever happen, but I don't really want to take that chance.

And though many don't do it, you really should adjust the alignment after installing these because it alters the scrub radius of the car, which definitely can influence camber and toe changes under braking. Yes, aftermarket wheels w/more aggressive offsets can do that too, but I'm just not sure I want to bother with all that.
In order to safely run spacers, you NEED to run hubcentric rings. Placing the weight of the car on any type of stud is a fail; they were not designed to hold that much weight. The hubcentric rings extend the ring on the hub out, equal to the length of the spacer so the wheels will still put their weight on the hub.

I've definitely had my fair share of tossing my car around with spacers, doesn't feel any different to me, and no problems yet.

++1, plus I would make sure any aftermarket wheels have the same hub bore size. Those so-called universal 5-lug pattern, or wheels that are made for different cars other than your own, may have a larger hub bore. This would be the same thing has putting weight on the studs itself and depletes the purpose of the hubcentric spacers

I understand about getting hubcentric spacers, but I'm referring specifically to the v2 type spacer/adapter that bolts on to the hub. If you think about it, even though it doesn't necessarily put the load on the studs, it still changes the mounting load from the hub to the spacer itself - the hub is no longer the load point and if the aluminum spacer cracks or fails, you're without a wheel pretty quickly.
