So, last weekend I decided to take my stock 18s gloss black. I plan on getting some new shoes this summer but for now I am really liking how it came out. I know how a lot of people feel about Plasti-Dip but for me it fit my situation perfectly. I had a lot of curb rash from the previous owner that I couldn't stand looking at. I know there are other DIYs for this, and this isn't really meant to be a DIY but I like to document my work.

What I used:

3 cans of Plasti-Dip
2 cans of Gloss Black
2 cans of Clear Coat
2 decks of playing cards
1 roll of painters tape
pressure washer



So first I went over to my buddies house that has multiple jacks and a place to work. It was the first day this year it was actually above 60 degrees so it felt like the perfect day.




My buddies 72' 240z in the front and his 300zx tt under the cover.



Started pressure washing the wheels -- followed by drying with towels

After they were cleaned and dried we put cards in the rims and taped some news paper to block the wheels from overspray -- newspaper got very annoying and we ended up ripping it off and just using the cards. Very little spray got on the wheels and I cleaned them up nicely with armour all anyways.



As you can see the wheels were pretty rashed up



Now comes the plasti-dip - 1st coat --



2nd coat --



3rd coat --

2nd coat of gloss --



Did 2 coats of clear but honestly its hard to tell which is which anymore so here are some shots of the last part of clear coating, then letting them sit for over 5 hrs, came back put them on the car and then I went to baltimore for the weekend so it sat for a few days before driving it.












Unfortunately it snowed as soon as I got back from Baltimore but I will get some better shots -- these shots are with the car still jacked but you get the idea. Also - it really pops once the infiniti caps are on there.






Any comments are welcome - good, bad, whatever -- I enjoy the wheels, I know its not for everyone. I've gotten a lot of comments from people, many think I have different wheels than stock - very surprised when I tell them they are stock painted.

 

Looks good. Did you find it easier to do than painting?

 

Absolutely -- it was very easy. Although to be honest my buddy did most the work, he is an auto body painter so it was easier to let him work his magic. All in All with dry time it was about a 5 hr job till we could put the wheels on the car. I would wait longer before driving though.

 

My buddy sent me a pic after he put the center caps on, its a grainy pic but it gives you a little better idea with caps on.

yeah, I know what you mean. The pics were done with my iphone and the lighting wasn't the best to show the color. The reflections do make it look chromish. Im hoping to wash my car in the next few days and get some good shots of the wheels clean.

Thanks for the comments guys! Appreciate the feedback. I thought they turned out exactly as I wanted. I was almost tempted to use the plasti-dip as a flat black and just clear over it but I am really happy with the gloss look.

 

Looks really good, out of all the OEM wheels for our car, 18s are my favorite.

ok guys so im new to this plasti dip thing...did you do anything to repair the curb rash or just paint with this plasti dip? I have some curb rash on one of my wheels and have been planning to paint them shortly, but if this plasti dip will help repair the curb rash or cover it up a lil i may have to use it. looks like i need to do some research.
