One difference from Honda's VTEC system is that NEO VVL engages the change of intake and exhaust cams independently for a flatter, more consistent power band. On the SR20VE, the intake camshaft is switched at 5000 rpm, and the exhaust at 6500 rpm.
Funny, since Nissan's frontrunner engines are all NA. VR38 is a halo.
While we're at it, lets not forget better economy, less emissions, and superior longevity, as well as versatility in both K20 form and K-series form vs the SR20VE and SR engines as a whole.
