Sure makes home defense scetchy then... fmj will likely go right through interior wall - potentially harming innocent family in next room...

Stupid law. Its amazing how states like CA and NJ make laws that actually benefit criminals and hinder law abiding citizens.

I'm assuming a hollow tip ruptures on impact and stays inside the guy?

That's the general idea behind them. The hollow points are usually developed in such a way that they "blossom" open upon hitting the target, so the "petals" as they're called do more damage to the enemy/criminal and slow down the bullet so it stays in the body longer. Compare that with an FMJ (full metal jacket) round that can theoretically shoot clean through the target and not do as much damage.

Another benefit to hollow points (and drawback of FMJ) is the overpenetration factor. If the hollow point expands and slows down on impact, it's less likely to overpenetrate anything beyond the target, thereby theoretically lessening the liability of those rounds shooting through many walls and hitting people or objects beyond what you're shooting at.

From wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollow-point_bullet

A hollow point is an expanding bullet that has a pit or hollowed out shape in its tip, generally intended to cause the bullet to expand upon entering a target in order to decrease penetration and disrupt more tissue as it travels through the target. It is also used for controlled penetration, where over-penetration could cause collateral damage (such as on an aircraft). In essence, the hollow point bullet has two interrelated purposes: to increase its size once within the target, thus maximizing tissue damage and blood loss or shock, and by remaining in the target to expend all of its kinetic energy in the target, some of which will be lost if the bullet continues through the target. Jacketed hollow points (JHPs) or plated hollow points are covered in a coating of harder metal to increase bullet strength and to prevent fouling the barrel with lead stripped from the bullet. The term hollow-cavity bullet is used to describe a hollow point where the hollow is unusually large, sometimes dominating the volume of the bullet, and causes extreme expansion or fragmentation on impact.

not necessarily true - but possible... many variables... where your are hit, caliber, type of round, what you are wearing, velocity (how far away was shooter)... among other things...

You can die from a FMJ as well as HP, but generally HP is a better self defense round - for all the reasons Calcul8 stated.

Personally I feel the fact that HP blossom prevents over-penetration is the strongest benefit... however, some HP are prone to getting clogged (resulting in characteristics similar to FMJ) and continuing through walls... for this reason I choose Hornady Critical Defense: http://www.hornady.com/store/critical_defense even though I also have some Remington Golden Saber and Winchester Supreme Elite (neither of which has the rubber plug in the hollow point)...
