... for those of us in Illinois (or any state where it's illegal), I wanted to get a little feedback on who's done what to their car, even though they know it can get them a ticket.

The following is illegal in IL, but have you done the following:
- Tinted the driver and passenger side window?? If so, what company did it, knowing that it's illegal? Any trouble from police so far??
- NO front plate. Who here doesn't have their front plate on?? I've already gotten warning for this so now I'm nervous about not having it on... but I don't want to ruin my Coupe's front bumper!
- Tinted license plate covers. I think these look sharp, esp. w/tinted windows, but once again illegal in IL. Anyone have these, and have ya gotten any flack from police??

Thanks in advance. The reason I ask is because I'm considering doing these things, but not sure if it's worth the risk of future tickets and fines.

Tint: I've done tint on the sides and haven't had any problems yet. I did a 35% titanium tint and it seems to keep things a little cooler during the summer. I think you start running into a little trouble when you go any darker than 35%. At the same time, it doesn't make any sense to go lighter than 35% as well. U can still see into the car, so I think I'm fine for now..

No front plate.... Yes, I am one of those. I have never been pulled over for it, but have received more than enough of those 25$ tickets. I try to keep on the dl, and that's been working fine.

 

I've never had tint on my front windows but have several friends that have [in IL]. Some of them get away with it but others have gotten tickets and had to prove it was removed to a judge. Really depends on your local cops and whether they are pr!cks or not about little stuff.

As far as front license plate ... I drive my last car (red Mitsu 3000GT VR-4) for 4 years and was pulled over a couple times for speeding but never once got in trouble for the front plate. *knocks on wood*

No front plate on my 04 G sedan. I bought the car last November and no problems thus far.

 

I have 21% tints on my windows, including the front 2. I have no license plate in front. got pulled over once by lake county sheriff. showed him my medical letter of exemption for the tints and drove off with a verbal warning on having no front plate. i got my windows tinted at pilsen auto glass in chicago. lifetime warranty, AMAZING job they did.

I'm in NW Indiana so front plates are not required. However, can you guys set the plate in your front window and get away with it?

PM MyG35ZX about this one. I just talked to him today and he got a warning for no front plate. He also had the front and pass windows tinted but he has a doctor's letter for it stating he is photosensitive so the cop didn't write him up on it. No tinted plate covers though but the others he did have.

Just get a letter for being photosensitive from your doctor and you're OK on the driver and passenger tints. Keep your front plate in the car and put it on the dash if you get pulled over. The cop told MyG35Zx that they don't ticket vettes in IL without a front plate because they know it's so hard to put on. If they don't ticket vettes, then why ticket any other car!

My brother has a Vette and he got a ticket for no front plate to that is BS. I was in the car when it happened. We were like "Don't you have some real criminals to chase?" That was the only ticket he got too. No other violation. The cop told him they were cracking down.

I follow all the rules. I do not need any extra bad Karma.

 

More importantly, does anyone know what is a moving violation and what is not a moving violation?

No front license plate = non-moving violation
tinted plate covers = ?
tinted front windows = ?

I just tell my doctor (or optometrist?) I'm sensitive to light and he'll write me a note? That sounds a little too easy...

The window tint and the front plate citations are only equipment violations.

The tinted registration covers are moving violations.

Tinted windows aren't a moving violation but if a cop wants to be a [insert expletive], he will pull you over for something else and then cite you for the tinted windows.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get your windows tinted at in the chicago suburbs? I care more about quality than price =)

I plan on doing 35% all the way around (coupe).
