The only requirement is that it must have Snell 1995 or later certification.

If you're going to a BMWCCA school an "M" (motorcycle) rated helmet is O.K. and you can find a relatively cheap one at a local bike dealership. Decide on open or closed face and try it on. I'd recommend sitting in your car with it before buying if you're over 5' 11" and have a sun roof. I'm 6' 1" got a Bell Mag 4 and am up against the roof. Word has it that Bieffe has a thinner profile and will give you a little help in that dept. Are you going to the 3/29 session? If so - See You There!

Yup, it's the 3/29 session, still not sure if my co-worker (e46 330i+sprts pkg) and I are going. (hopefully it isn't filled up yet)

Are you sure they will allow a M rated helmet? My first time at the track, so I'm not sure of all the rules.

 

The M is O.K., I checked last year when I did my 1st session. I would suggest you sign up ASAP or you'll miss it, I think they accept 100 or so and 92 were registered last time I looked.

 

I have a couple of motorcycle helmets if interested. I can take pics. I have good ones not cheap *** ones. Arai and Shoei. Let me know if interested I caould snap some pics and sizes. They are used but not funky.

 

Most tracks requiring helmets won't let you run a motorcycle helmet. That being said, I've only seen them check snell rating when running in faster classes.

The reason for not using a motorcycle helmet has to do with the impact rating. A motorcycle helmet is rated for a single impact, such as a rider striking an object or falling off of the bike. An automotive rating is rated for multiple impacts, such as in a rollover incident where your noggin is smacking the door, roof, steering wheel, and rollcage (if equipped).

Be smart-be safe.

 

Shop for a brain bucket: You need to try several for fit. Remember that not all heads are created equal. It is an important piece of equipment, I would not skimp. I wear glasses and the Bell M2 has a large eyeport and good ventilation.

 

I use the Bell M3 and like it very much. It is not cheap, but I only have one head. There are lots of places to save a few bucks, like gloves, shoes, even nomex suits (though I personally will not compromise on a suit when toasting ones nuts is at issue versus cost). Similarly, when it comes to a helmet, that is when you get the absolute best one you possibly can. Wait on another mod to the car, and spend the bucks on the helmet.
