I finally picked up a G35 Coupe 6MT tonight. The car has 82K but dealer verified that short block was changed out at 79K miles. Car is smooth is strong...on the way home I tried to chirp it in 2nd but was met with engine "slip" light and temporary power cut-off. I thought to myself I may have gotten a car with a new engine but the transmission is still 82K and maybe clutch is slipping? Sitting here writing this, I now remember about the "VDC" and I'm thinking that got in the way of my spirited driving?
I thinking about getting rid of the 19" and going with a 18" with a little extra rubber on it...what do you think?
Update: Got my first 3 mods in...K&N drop in filter/ Clear corners and a very subtle tail tint (kind of wish I had gone darker on the tint)...Yes, I had to cut around the round part because I could not get it to go flush.

that was definitely the VDC kicking in, the transmissions in these cars are really strong (except for some of the older ones, mainly 03-04) so you shouldn't have a problem with it at all.
I personally like the OEM 19's so I would keep those... but tires are cheaper in 18" so its really up to you.
First thing I'd do is some maintenance, big one is spark plugs but transmission and dif fluid I'm sure need a change as well, and its always a good idea to start your car off with a clean slate as soon as its truely YOURS

If you don't plan on modding much NGK LFR5AIX-11 are OEM heat range and great, you can step down to the LFR6AIX-11 if you are going to mod/tune and you will not regret it
From some quick reads I plan on doing a few of the bolt-on mods. MD spacer/ MREV2 and perhaps some kind of intake. I love the stock exhaust sound so I may just limit myself to a HFC.
Unless you plan on spending a LOT of money for mainly looks & sound that's a wise decision, full exhausts get spendy real fast. The majority of your gains on the exhaust side are going to come from replacing the gigantic OEM cats. As for an Intake the most cost effective solution is an OEM nissan 350z intake pipe (z tube) and K&N filter, most aftermarket intakes look cool but won't give you much performance increase and many of them actually perform worse.
Also look into an Uprev Osiris ECU reflash, the electronic throttle never opens 100% in stock form and really limits you, not to mention the added benefits of correctly calibrating the AFR, removing the speed limiter, etc.

I prefer to be around 2k-4.5k rev as this is where the nice exhaust note is...reminds me of my dearly departed 1995 RX7-TT.
I am jealous! Looking back on it, I should have gotten a 6MT for multiple reasons. For the record, if you ever decide to upsize the tires on your OEM 19s, I wouldn't go over 245 width for the front and a maximum of 265 width in the rear. I stuffed 285s on the rear of mine, and it just honestly isn't worth it. No dangers or anything, the sidewall just flexes a lot. Take it for what its worth. Listen to the guys on this form/thread, they know what they are saying. There is a lot of good, basic information in the the posts in this thread alone. Congrats on the G!
