Engine rebuild?

My 04 g35 coup started to go out on me I'm noticing a leak near my spark plugs and oil on my steering rack. If I let it sit for a while it will start to blow smoke but will stop when I start driving my mechanic told me the piston rings are the issue he said to either sell the car do a rebuild or a swap.Any one have any input on my situation im ok with doing a rebuild. I personally think it's the valve cover but I'm no mechanic. Taking it to another person tomorrow just to be sure.

A leaking valve cover can leak at the spark plugs and is a common issue. Is the smoke coming out of the exhaust?

Find a new mechanic, before you replace your motor have a compression test done to see if your rings are wasted. Sounds like your leak is the valve cover gaskets that need replacing, but have the test done first!

To be clear, the valve cover gaskets Gary is referring to are the o-rings around the spark plugs. That is a known problem...they eventually leak and the plug ends up sitting in a pool of oil, which then runs out of the well and down the engine block. Infiniti's design made these o-rings non-replaceable. There is a kit where you can drill out the Infiniti design and insert a modified design that doesn't have the problem. I also have a dim recollection of a thread where the folks making that kit were not being responsive to queries. Search the forum. Otherwise, you have to replace the entire valve cover, and that is considerably more expensive.
