Talking Howdy! Im an Newish G35 owner

Been lurking for over a year or so. I have found so much great information and find this such a valuable tool for the the internet mechanic such as myself! I figured that I am starting to take on some major projects that it was time I introduced my self and my humble car.

She has 147,000 miles, 2004 G35 Coupe. Completely stock. Will be used for a daily driver but she has been neglected since I got her a little less than a year ago. I will post pictures soon 'cause I know how you all like to see... but first I have to rid it of its embarrassing pin stripe and clean her up a bit. I am not new to forums and not new to Nissan. Use to frequent the Titan Armada Forums in years past and loved to help they provided and the friendships that were cultivated. I was in on the beginning of times for the Titan forums in 2004... So much has changed!

So I'll be embarking on some much needed TLC for the engine in the next few weeks and then on to the body and her looks. She kind of looks like me at the moment... tired old gal.

So first project will be the Valve Cover replacement. At first I thought I just needed gaskets but to my dismay there is oil in the spark plug tubes and figured since I had it town apart I should go ahead and replace. I'll also swap out the 2 solenoids, PCV Valve and thought about doing the oil catch can. Haven't figured out if this is something that is worth doing in the long run. Thoughts? I'm down about 1 quart of oil every 3k miles and it seems to be getting worse. These are the things I know may be the cause and the obvious leak around the VC so figured I'd start there. Main seal looks ok and she runs good with no misfires so I don't think I have piston issues. But all advise I get I will look at much closer to determine the cause.

Also.... I haven't searched yet but my car absolutely will not run on anything other than 93 or higher octane. Literally says Nope Nope sucker and dies. Not even a bit of fight going down. Seemed a bit odd to me as I've put lower than recommended in other vehicles and never had an issue. Maybe they didn't run as nice but to shut down? Perhaps there is an underlying cause?

So to close, thank you all for being here and sharing your wealth of knowledge! (My boyfriend has no idea that I cheat like this... he thinks I was born with a wrench of something.)

Looking forward to this journey with you all!

The car should run fine on 87, i have no idea what could be causing that but it's definately not normal.

Yep, start poking around for vacuum leaks and such, something's not right if you're randomly stalling on 87 octane fuel. Pull all the spark plugs and inspect. Perform a reset for the ECU and Idle Air.

No need for new PCV; just clean it out and reinstall. There are no wear parts in there.

Oil catch can will do nothing for oil consumption. What it will do is keep the inside of the intake plenum clean of oil vapor deposits. But those deposits are not related to the consumption you are seeing. That is due to the less than optimal Chinese rings that were used in the cars. No fix for that beyond a major rebuild, so just consider the oil use part of your fuel budget and keep it topped up.

welcome to G35Driver. Very strange issue you have with the octane of the fuel. try a good fuel system cleaner, I use Seafoam about 2x a year to clean out carbon deposits and keep things fresh.

I did have an issue with stalling when I first got my 2003 6mt coupe. I discovered that the fuel injectors were seeping and flooding out the engine at stoplights. If you have stock catalytic convertors that issue can melt them into a lump quick.

What kind of mileage are you getting? any other things crop up in the last week?
