Keith, engine problem question.
Keith,

Thanks for the help. I just took in my G35 6-speded coupe for its second
service. (8500 miles) Just prior to taking it in I noticed some motor noise
with cold starts. The noise would go away when the motor warmed. No
warning lights of any kind ever came on. Fortunately I have driven the car
little since the new noise started.

The dealership informed me that the noise was caused by a low oil level.
This concerns me very much.

1/ Why would a new car be going thru so much oil?
2/ Why didn't one of the idiot lights warn me that the oil level was low?
3/ Has the engine been harmed in any way due to this?
4/ Should I be talking the Infinity about issues such as future problems etc.?

I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,

Doug

the oil consumption thing has been a problem for some people with this car... one of the G-Squad members had his whole engine replaced by Infiniti.

coupetech, good to know i have someone in my area (sorta, i'm in SI) who is mod friendly and a G35Driver member. if i ever take my car into your dealership, can i ask for you to work on it? or is that not allowed.

in the spring, you should come out to some of the G-Squad events.... there are lots of guys from NNJ that come out.

oil consumption
Thanks for the reply. What would you suggest in regards to dealing with
the dealership and possible problems? I'm going to have this probelm noted
on the work order so that it is in print somewhere.

Thanks,

do a search here on the forums, you should come up with lots of information on this issue. in the meantime, just keep an eye on your oil level... i usually take a peek at mine once a week.

I would immediately have the dealer check the problem. Usually that means they change your oil and fill it. BE SURE THEY DO NOT OVER FILL!!! SOme shady delaers have been known to over fill it so when you come back after 1K miles it still looks normal.

AFter the change and you confirm it is filled to the appropriate level (I would have them show you). They should make you come back after 1K to see how much oil was burned. Then again at 2K.

1QT per 3K is "NORMAL" or so the car manufacturers say. It is your responsibility to check it. Depending on how much you drive, you may want to check it once per week.

In order to get the dealer to check your oil consumption, you may have to go back to them saying that you have to add "x" qts per 1K miles etc.
