Switch to Winter Wheels
Switch to Winter Wheels
Winter RWD newbie here. To the guys in the northeast/mid atlantic states, when do you typically put on your dedicated winter tires? I want to hold off as long as safely possible. Appreciate your input.
The mosy important factor is tempature.
The compound in winter tires is very soft.
Warm temps will prematurely wear your tires.
I like to wait until temps are regularly 35 or below.

You will need 4 winter tires. Even though you get your power from the rear wheels, remember that your front tires are what steers you. If you don't get good traction with your front tires, you'll have no control of your car. You need all 4.
Also, I like to wait until temps are consistently 40 or below.

I paid almost $1000 for 4 Dunlop WinterSport M3's last year - tires only. I mount them on a set of 18" OEM rims I bought from a member for $600, brand new. It's not cheap, but they work really well and I feel safe.
These Dunlop tires even handle well at 144mph!

Same here for the Dunlop M sport they are not cheap and forget trying to get 19" winters for OEM 19's only blizzak has them and they are even more dollars.
I thought I saw someone on G35nyc selling 17" wheel and tire setup for $400.
That is a gift if he hasn't sold them yet mx220.
yea, nothing in that price range.. i have a set of winter tires and wheels i may be interested in selling.. looking for $1000 for the set.. just cant decide if i want to hold off driving my G all winter long since i have a beater or if i should through on the winters and drive her once in a while when its nice out..
but regardless, you need winter wheels..

to the OP, i dont plan on changing mine out till i hear predictions of snow. The cold weather doesnt bother me but i dont drive like a maniac. So im going to put off as long as possible.
i have summer tires, and just ordered mine from tirerack today. i plan to change it when the high temp gets to 40 or 45 degrees. according to the information i've read about summer tires, the grip starts to go away around that temperature.
