GOT BOOST ??
GOT BOOST ??
At some of the meets we have been having there's been alot of chatter about people wanting to go to a Forced Induction system. One member on this message board was very close to getting boost on his car till I sent him this thread.
For those of you thinking about getting boost, read this thread. It is lengthy but stay with it. It got started as of the result of dude's VQ35 getting blown after a FI installation with 6k on the engine and no warrantee to cover it. The thread has alot of information and opinions about altering the induction system on the VQ.
Here's the initial post and the link to the thread that followed it.
Read it and weep.
------------------------------
Maybe some of you technical experts out there can offer some advice on this tale of woe. I have a 2004 G35 Coupe 5AT. I had the ATI Procharger and Borla catback exhaust installed with about 2,000 miles on the car. There were no other mods. All installation was to ATI specs by an authorized installer. The fuel management unit was set conservatively, and I didn't try to increase the boost. The engine was tuned on a dyno. I had the dealer change the oil to Mobil 1 at about 3,000 miles. I've only used 91 octane gas.
I drive pretty conservatively. After putting about 2,000 miles on the supercharger, I pushed it to about 7,000 RPM (briefly). This blew a lot of oil out of the breather tube. My dealer said there should never be blow-by from the breather tube, so I may have engine damage. My tuner said blow-by is normal, but that my car was doing it more than other supercharged G35s. The car continued to run fine, but oil spillage continued.
The tuner suggested a fix that ATI concurred with - run the breather tube through a one-way check valve, and then connect it back to the intake manifold (as in the stock set-up). But this caused more oil leakage from the crankcase. So the tuner undid that, and put a filter at the end of the breather tube. But the filter smoked excessively. I also noticed smoke coming from the engine at idle when the oil filler cap is removed. So I had the tuner run a compression check. The results:
Cylinder #1 - 220
Cylinder #2 - 150
Cylinder #3 - 170
Cylinder #4 - 115
Cylinder #5 - 170
Cylinder #6 - 80
Only one cylinder has strong compression, and one is clearly dead. The tuner believes I need a new engine. The engine has only 6,000 miles on it.
Questions for the experts:
1. What caused this problem?
2. Do I really need a new engine, or could there be another fix?
3. How much are new engines anyway?
4. Is this a warranty claim with either Infiniti or ATI?

Re: GOT BOOST ??
Neil, honestly i know your looking out for us, but the ATI procharger count for blowing up engines on 350z's and g35's are over 10, they are not reliable and was a pretty horrible kit. The vortech though, has and is being used by many people with good tuning and raising boost with no problems, same with the greddy tt kit and pe. Ati is horrible.

Re: GOT BOOST ??
Yeah but still, boost is boost! Our engines run on 10.5 to 1 compression. If you look at anyone with a real street/strip car with FI, you will see the ideal compression ratio they want is about 8.5:1 or 9:1 max. At 10.5:1, you run the risk of detonating the motor. Our 6 cylinder engines were designed to get the highest amount of HP out of it, while still being extremely reliable for years on end. Is there some leeway there, sure, but how much is the question. With stock internals, I can't see there being too much room to get much more out of our motors. Rebuilding them with better rods, crank, pistons, endcaps, etc., would be a different story!
Speaking of which, does anyone know if our motors have a 2 or 4 bolt main?
Just my $.02!

Re: GOT BOOST ??
I feel you drew but mad people ont he forum and with 350z's are running very reliable with tuning on TT kits rite now and upwards of almost 500 HP at the crank ive seen!! NP's so far, but i will def. be going to a 8.5:1 compression if i have the money to stroke the engine and go FI, which i doubt!! Maybe ill just be carefull with it lol (RITE) Anyway looks like ill be selling my car alot sooner than 2 years, my moms friend said he loves my car and what ive done with it, he wants to take the lease over and told me to tell all of the other people who wanted to buy the car out to forget about it lol, G coupe here i come!!

The main thing is to think twice if u r gonna go FI. It's not as simple as popping on a Z tube and such. Alot of research and planning should go into this type of mod. As was mentioned and Diesel did a good job in his post, these puppies are not designed for it. Did u read the rest of the thread Martin. I thought it gave alot of insight and opions about the subject. Probably the best thread I've read on this subject. It also shows that going to an authorized dealer of the product is not gonna get the results you are looking for, at least this poor sole in the post didn't.
I'm so sorree to hear about your ride Martin. We'll have no other seedan to rag on. We'll need to find anotherone to use as a U-haul too. What time frame will all this be happening in. Can u take us all for a last ride in it Saturday or sumtin. Maybe we all hop in and go for an ice cream run. I'm really suprised you'd be going to a slower ride with the coupe. Re: GOT BOOST ??
Well although im "faster" than most lightly modded coupes or stock coupes, when i ran Sean's coupe he was stock and an excellent driver and it wasnt a blowout, but it was obivous who was faster, very impressive to me to see how fast a 6spd coupe really is with all of my mods! Imagine them on a coupe =) Also, ive been reading up on FI and talking to a few members with FI also, and became very knowledgable about the subject and tuning, not just throwing it on and going. I just said that is 1 kit for an example, one that has a bad rep, was a shitty kit and blew up motors in over 10 cars g35's and 350z's!! Thats not on my list, and i talked to gurgen alot about it, he exaplined stuff to me and it all makes sense, but these cars in all actuality can handle it, but not in excess like anything else. Re: GOT BOOST ??
Make makes one kit different from the next? Pound for pound of boost of course. The only difference I can think of is oiling, some are self contained and some you have to tap into the oil pan? Martin, woudl you care to share some of your learnings?

Re: GOT BOOST ??
Well i dont know much about the pro-charger honestly, but it wasnt well put togetherr, its running higher boost then every other SC kit to get the same results as lets say the vortech and vortech runs over 1lb of boost lower, its all strain ont he engine. Then the procharger also doesnt adapt to much ecu change and tuning as well as other kits, basically it wasnt put together well and tested enough to release to the public, the reliability was horrible on them and that's why they were basically taken off the market!!
