Hey guys I have a question pertaining to selling one of my cars. I'm here in NY and I'm selling a car to a guy in Maryland. I want to get this all figured out before he flies up here to pick it up so hopefully members from Maryland can help out. Is there any way he can get a temporary registration/ interstate in-transit permit through the Maryland department of vehicles so he can drive the car home from New York? (or whatever the equivalent of the NYS DMV is)

I have all the paperwork set for us to head over to the DMV here but if he can possibly get it in Maryland that would be better. I say this because he would be coming in on a Saturday and our local DMV is only open until 1PM on Saturdays and I can see it now where his flight gets delayed or something and we won't be able to get to the DMV for him to hand in his insurance paperwork for get a NYS in-transit permit. That or there is something either me or him forget and we can't get a in-transit sticker. My last option is to let him drive with my plates and have him mail them back but I'm kind of sketched out doing that because the weather/snow he might be driving through could be real bad at times (lake effect snow) and I don't want him wrecking the car while it's still under my name.

Him being able to bring his own paperwork/tags would make things that much easier and less stressful. If anyone has any other suggestions that would be awesome because I've only sold cars to other New Yorkers so I'm a newb when it comes to this. Hopefully someone from Maryland, that has bought a car through private sale from a different state, can help out with this. Thanks!

 

I bought a vehicle in a different state and had the bill of sale / title in my name signed over. I was pulled over on the way back home for expired tags (his tags were expired).

Cop let me go because I had these above things on me and it was about 5 minutes to the DMV in Ohio .

I called my insurance agent and bought one day insurance to bring it home. Have him do the same.

From what I've read on the internet, plenty of people that bought privately are saying they didn't even have plates on the car and just had the signed over title, bill of sale and new owners proof of insurance so if a LEO pulled them over they just handed them those three things and were let go. Seems weird and I'd be worried leaving that up to a law enforcement officers discretion but I haven't read of one person having the car impounded or even receiving a ticket. I want everything to go as smooth as possible for the guy buying my car while he drives it back to Maryland.

 

He should be able to get a 30 day temp tag from the MVA office, he should explain his situation and show proof of insurance and it should be no problem. He's gonna have to get it inspected once he get back to Maryland and he'll need tags that will allow him to drive the car while he makes necessary repairs if any.

 

the only way he can get a temp tag (14 day inspection tag for used cars) is to send him the title. he has to take it to the dmv and file for transfer of ownership. they will give him a temp tag to take with him and he needs to complete the inspection within the 14 days. the only temp tags i've seen issued for out of staters for used cars are issued by the out of state dealership that sells the car. that's the law for md. it may be different for ny. they may be able to give him something for transport. you should go on line or give them a call.
