Another tire question... help a confused gal out :D

The more I learn, the more confused I get.... so, can you guys help me out? I have been web surfing the forum for the last 5 hours, so very confusing so I thought I better ask the experts before I buy.

As you guys know, I need to replace my rear tires coz they wouldn't pass state inspection since it only has 1/32" left. My front tires still have 7/32" left. They are the stock Bridgestone tires for the 05 coupe, 19" rims.

So, I looked around, and found a really good deal on Toyo tires, and Toyo T1R seem to be the hot ones to get for the car, affordable and yet good performance ($925 shipped to PA, all 4). So, that's what I want to replace the balding stock ones with.

Here are my questions:

1) This is what I would like to get: 245/35/19 for the front and 275/35/19 Toyo Proxes T1R tires for the back. Will this setting fit on the stock 19" rims?
Not planning on lowering the car or changing out rims anytime soon.

2) Should I replace all 4 tires now, or can I just replace the back ones with the 275/35/19 set up? IS that even an option?

3) Or if I need to go with a 245/40, just like the stock tires if I want to keep the front tires (which is 225/40) for now?

4) How long would 7/32" of thread left on the front will last? How many more miles?

My front tires still have a little bit of life left, and I'd be happy to keep using them till they're bald so I won't have to spend soooo much on tires right now, sigh. Have to pay off taxes...

Opinions, and suggestions?

Thanks! Lynn

I'm in the same dilema. My rears are near the wear markers but my fronts still have a few thousand miles left in them.

7/32" is a little more than half tread, so I guess if you double the mileage you put on since the tires were new, that would be how many miles total you can get out of them.

It's always good to replace all 4 at once, but if you have that much tread on the fronts, then it should be ok to replace only 2 of them. Replacing just one is a last resort option.

Our size tires are a bit unique so we don't have many choices. You might be able to get away by going with 255/35 19 on the rears. That's an M3 rear tire so there's many more options with that size. I think 275 is a bit too wide for our rear wheels, especially with such a low profile.

Hey Lynn,

Did you check out tirerack.com at all? See if they have them and how much and call them and ask questions. I have had really good service with them and no problems. They have been very helpful and will drop ship the tires to a place near you depending on who is putting them on for you.

Hey Shelah... how have you been doing? How's the new place plan coming along in NY? I did check out tirerack.com, but they don't carry Toyo tires. Even if you special order them, it'll still be much more $$ than what I can get from one of the sponsors here on the forum eventho' they're just right in Delaware.... .what a bummer.

answer to questions

1) yes...you should be ok with this setup. the difference between your stock setup in the back would be a width of 3 cm's and 2 cm's width up front. if anyone hasn't told you what the designations are, the first number is width in mm's, the second sidewall height in percentage of width, and the third is obviously wheel size.

2/3) shops will recommend you change all four, but you should be o.k. just changing backs or fronts. never change one side at a time with different brands or sizes.

4) normal driving should give you about 4000 miles or four months (estimated). more agressive driving obviously wear them down faster.

How wide are the 19" wheels? Most of the people that are running 275 in the rear have 10 or 10.5" wide wheels.

the oem 19s are 8.5 in the rear..there is a thread about havin 275s on oem 19s search it. I honestly think it might be unsafe to go 275s in the rear...i will be changing mine soon and im going to just go one size wider than stock... 235s front and 255s rear

Hey Lynn, things are good. I am living in PA and commuting to NYC every day. It isn't too bad although this week, I def need more sleep. Sorry tirerack didn't have your tires. I gotta swap mine out this weekend and put the 18s back on AND wash the G.

if you try calling a few tire warehouses nearby the prices should be very affordable. i would swap out tires like a pair of shoes on your feet-- you just don't replace one at a time.

Just got a set of Toyo's for my G. They seem to be working out fine so far. Got them at STS Auto for about $200 each installed.

275's will fit on a 9.5" rim...not sure about 8.5" though....most tire manufacturers will tell you on their website what range of rim widths will fit a specific tire. I just checked the TOYO website and the smallest width rim that will work with 275's is 9.0". Good luck.

yeah, i'd figure i better play it safe, and not use a 275 on the rear tires since the width of the 19" stock rims is only 8.5".

so, anyway... kept the front tires, coz it's got half a life left, and going to switch out the back ones this weekend, with the current set up, 244/40. got a really awesome deal from a tire shop up in collegeville that friends recommended...
putting on some Michelin Pilot Sport AS tires (all season!!! yes!). Got it for $200 each tire, installed and balanced.

Definitely makes sense keeping the fronts & just getting new rears. I bet you'll need new rears at the same time as the fronts, if not sooner! Wow....great deal for your Michelin's.
