Newark, NJ

Help,
I moved to East Brunswick about nine months ago to work at a hotel in the same area. Due to the sale of the property I am now working in Newark near exit 13A.

Can anybody recommend a place within a ten mile radius of Newark that would be a good place to buy a house? Where my G won't get raped? OR: Do you think I should stay in East Brunswick and live with the 46 mile daily commute?

Thanks,
JE

You'll be fine in the Ironbound. You can also try around the University Heights area (Rutgers, Essex, NJIT, UMDNJ). I know they are building a bunch of houses/condos right off the University Heights exit on 280. They all have garages.

Buy a house either downneck (the ironbound), in harrison, or kearny. They are all about the same price range. A new 3 family house, the ones they are building all over the place, go for approx. $500,000. So prepare yourself!!!

hey Staten Island is right over the bridge and if you have EZ pass the bridge is only $4.00 or $4.50...houses are about the same price as jersey houses but you dont pay nearly as much taxes as you would in NJ...

I say your better off buying a house in harrison or kearny. Got the path and njtransit in harrison/newark. Also, if you buy something for example for $400,000, it's almost guaranteed that it will sell for $475-$500,00 in the next 1-2 years. Also, nice neighborhoods and awesome people!!!

Thanks guys,
Those were much better options than the people at work were giving me.
Clifton seems to have the most selection.

I think the prices here are about the same as Alexandria, Va. where I lived last, but the taxes here are far worse!

I still have a few months to go before my condo lease expires in EB.

What is the "Ironbound"?

The ironbound is the "Portuguese" section of Newark. It's the section that's surrounded by railroads on all sides, hence the name "ironbound". Anyway, it's the nicest part of newark! Best restaurants in jersey, great mass transit, good neighborhoods and the best and biggest festival/parade in jersey and maybe the northern eastcoast! That's the Portuguese Day Parade! Second Weekend of June I think. It starts on a friday and last for 3 days until Sunday!!! They basically close down Ferry St. and in order to get to the ironbound your probably better off parking in Harrison and walking over the bridge! Anyway, I'm on a rant now!!! You should just go to the ironbound or downneck as some others call it, and check it out for yourself! I think you'll like it!!! Come hungry...

HAHA, i hate driving down Ferry street. I don't mind the view of all the hot Portuguese chicks walking, but I can't stand the guys in rice mobiles who just "cruise" up and down it trying to mack it to the chicks.

Safil, you ever been to Hero King? I have never seen so much meat piled on a sub in my life before! I go there once a week for lunch.

EZ Pass even have a package for Staten Islander that after 20 trips per month it's pretty much free for all 3 bridges going to jerzee. Staten Island is exit 13 so it's pretty much one exit away.

You can always try Belleville , Nutly, or Clifton as well, Anything on the Rt 21 north side is safer then the south side. No offense peoples! Its a bit pricey but worth in investment wise. Also exit 8 up on Rt 21 north ( ends at RT 46 and 80 junc) is around 15 mins max to newark without traffic ( rush hours ) and is no more then 12 miles.

Im from belleville if you need any more info PM me.

Yeah, I been to Hero king. You should go to this new place on Ferry between Jackson St. adn Van Buren St. It's on the right side going east, towards NYC. Anyway, It's called Bra something. It's brazilian of course. All you can eat for $8!!! But I don't mean none of that fried stuff like chinese buffets or places like that. This is almost all grilled meats, great salads, fresh vegies (hot or cold or grilled) pasta's. You get the picture. It's really grade A food. ANyway, just thought I should let you know. I go there once every 2 weeks, got to watch my figure, lol...

i live in Belleville too, property taxes are going up so I dunno if I would recommend buying a house here. Also my next door neighbors G got broken in his driveway. Not to mention i had serveral neighbors houses broken into as well(no it wasn't me). If you got the cash I would recommend Nutley, it has belleville as a buffer to newark.

Leaving staten island is always free. We want everyone to leave, it's when you trying to get in we charge ya. It's really getting crowded on S.I. Ten years ago it used to be nice, now it's a mad house.
There are different plans for EZ pass for residents, working in jersey everyday you could pay only $2.50 for NJ bridges, but you have to cross it 20 times a month.
I might be mistaken, but the houses seem much cheaper in Jersey, but have higher taxes.
