Since when is knocking ever good? To get the most out of the fuel? I don't care about the fuel, I want a quiet engine that will last forever

By the way, I also have the pinging sound and nothing I've done resolves it. It can be described as you all described it: When you first start driving it'll ping lightly and then as the knock sensor retards the timing, the knock goes away.

 

They ping on 93 Octane too.

 

Ya its a bummer, but its better than the car being mapped for cheaper fuel and having less power in the upper ranges.

Wonder if Z owners report the same? I know my 04 Maxima never pinged.

 

Slight occasional detonation is okay and won't hurt anything. It's when you're pinging a lot, loud, continious and often is when you will hurt the internals over time. With those conditions, you're basically beating it to death.

One thing to keep in mind, the rev-up VQ's are tuned to get the most hp out the crappy fuel we're given with only 91 oct. which puts it at the edge of detonation in timing degrees it's tuned for. Hell, 95 used to be considered regular grade 30 some odd years ago.

The Maxima does not have the same hp output as the G's or is it tuned to do so, it's tuned on a less advanced timing degree. More retard in timing = less hp and less chance of detonation. You don't have to run premium grade in Maxima's if i'm not mistaken. It's tuned in timing degrees to run on regular. And I believe you can also run regular in the non rev-up VQ's that only put out 280hp (5AT's). Not sure, but think I read that somewhere. But the 298hp's, no way. That's why Nissan has that sticker inside the fuel door on 6mt's that states 'premium fuel only'.

If only premium petrol was 95, there be no chance of detonation with the current timing degree ECU mapping. Might even get away with 92, maybe.

Mine says 91 octane only on the gas cap and I have a 5AT 280hp version, well it was 280hp when I bought it.

I'm not aware of any places that have 93. However, the 76 station on the corner of Almaden Expressway and Foxworthy (San Jose) does have 100 octane. Last time I filled up it was $5.09 a gallon. The price doesn't seem to go up and down like 89-91 octane. It's only gone up over the years. Due to the limited availability, they can charge a "premium".

Ummm...yeah kindda. Not using off brand gas anymore. Seems to have helped. Plus weather not in the 100's anymore.
I'm running lean anyways according to my past two Dyno A/F charts. Don't know if this is common with 2006 RevUp VQ's OEM tuning.
Heard somewhere in Sonoma, think Sunco sells that sweet juice too.
Some other states in the US has 93 oct as their normal premium. But Cali is, of course, not on that bandwagon. We have that so called special formulated and oxgenated 91 which is the norm for us.

 

NorCal here, too and it's warm right now. I started noticing pings and the dealer says try better gas... I've been using CostCo premium the last year... DOUH! $5/gallon at Shell or Chevron doesn' t sound like a lot of fun...

Also, noticed a lot of people posting problems, but not a lot of follow up with solutions!

it is possible the ping you hear is the VTC sprockets adjusting the valve timing....It is very common and alot people think it is pinging when it really isnt.
