Pinging on 91 octane?
I always use Shell 93 octane when i was in florida, it was also pinging, especially when its hot outside (hot most of time). only happend about 5 - 10 minutes after i started the car.
Now i live in San Francisco using whatever brand 91 octane, and i haven't heard any pinging (yet!). Is it becuase its colder in SF?

I've been doing the Oil Consumption testing on my G35, and it quite possible that you're low on oil. Again, this is stemming from my issue, when my engine was low on oil, it started to rattle at low RPM during acceleration. After a fresh oil change that rattle went away.

^ Good point on the OC thing. My old VQ w/OC pinged even when level full and worse when almost a qt down. OC kills oct rating.
My new VQ has only slightly a couple times on hot days and no where near as bad with my old VQ.

The crackling seemed to coincide w/ my discovery of the dreaded "oil consumption issue". That's why I was worried that it's more than just pinging. I'm using some fuel system cleaner right now and also octane booster. I've noticed that the car is running my smoother and w/ more power, but the crackling still persists... hmmm..... wished the service manager was a little more helpful and in-depth with his evaluation of the noise.
